Digital dash swap for 1987 Daytona Shelby

    Hello,

I don't know if this has been covered already. It it has, I can't find the post. What will it take to swap an analog dash for a digital one in a 1987 Daytona Shelby? Is it a pretty easy swap or am I asking for problems? Unlike most folks, I like the digital dash better. Any advise would help. Regular grocery items are what you may possible spot on the Food Lion Ad.

ill take a stab in the dark. since its an 87 car its going to have a cable driven speedo.
and the plugs on the digital dash are different.

so, you;ll need the harness or pigtail ends from a digital car. most of the wires will match up and you'll have to add the electric speed sensor signal.

+1 I pulled the digidash out of my 86' 600 and it was not a cable driven unit.

I think that swapping inst. clusters can be tricky when it comes to the digital ones, as I have read that the wiring harnesses are not all equipped with the plugs for it. You would need the pigtails for it, and some wiring diagrams if this is the case.

My 87 Daytona Pacifica had the digital dash and no speedo cable, I haven't taken my 87 Shelby Z apart enough to know on that one.

You're going to need the digidash dash and its two connectors. Lots of cutting and splicing wiring involved.

    Analog to Digital Convertion.

Forget the wiring diagram, they are all wrong. Just go by the COLOR of the wire and you'll be fine. You have to find a constant 12v pos for the red wire, you can find that wire in the head light control nub. You don't have to worry about display dimming. You don't have to worry about parking brake indicator lamp, because you already got the brake warning lamp.

    +1 tryingbe
just did this to my 87z this past summer. I ended up cutting off the analog plugs and splicing them to the digital ones. Then soldered and heat shrinked both to the leads coming out of the dash so I can go back if I want. I used a third hand to help soldering in the dash cubby, that help tremendously. good luck.

    tryingbe,

Thanks for the help. One more question. I see the LeBaron GTS digdash has all the gauges showing unlike the Daytona. Will this fit. Seem like it's the same size and looks way cooler.

Re: Digital dash swap for 1987 Daytona Shelby

Ok, I am doing the same swap in an 89 Daytona. I have an 88 and a 89 book side by side so I can compare colors and diagrams. You made it easy by pointing out what is "not needed" but my question is this, are they not needed in the sense that it works without them, or not needed in that there is no way to hook them up? I'm not lazy or bad with electronics so I will try to figure it out on my own if no one answers, but I want everything to work as it would in an original digital car.

    As you noted...

Fused Battery Feed Red - Is this for memory for the gauge selection?
Display Dimming Yellow/Orange - can the gauges dim? I want them to if possible
Parking Brake Indicator Lamp Black/White - does the BRAKE! light still come on with the p-brake even if this is not hooked up?
Park Warning Lamp Black/Blue Not Needed - what does this even do? same as above?
Driver Door Switch Black/Blue Doesn't work - ??? make the unit come on when you open the door to check the mileage? if so that is pretty cool.
Fuel Pacer Lamp Green/Orange Doesn't work - does this have anything to do with my navigator?
    Not Used/Water Temperature Not Used or Red/Blue Doesn't work - ???

Good luck to you. I remember it not working out for me.

Parking Brake Indicator Lamp Black/White - does the BRAKE! light still come on with the p-brake even if this is not hooked up?
Brake light is taken care of by "18 Brake Warning Grey/Black "

Park Warning Lamp Black/Blue Not Needed - what does this even do? same as above?
No idea. No wire from the analog plug works for it.

Driver Door Switch Black/Blue Doesn't work - ??? make the unit come on when you open the door to check the mileage? if so that is pretty cool.

ok, I have all the diagrams. I'm going to look them over while I'm in class today and try to figure out what all these random wires do. I will report back!

BTW, tryingbe, does your water temp gauge work even without that wire hooked up? Does the gauge dim when you dim your radio and such?

Water temperature is taken care of by

I don't remember if the dim works, I don't ever dim my dash.

The parking lamp warning and the temp warning are for the electronic voice alert modules some of the cars had. Door swtich is hooked to the (you guessed it) door switch. The dimming thing can be run to the radio harness.

I have no way to test it, but I tracked it all down. I guess I'll find out if it all works when I turn the key for the first time.

    Wires at light switch -
    YL/OR - Dimmer
    RD - 12V
    BK/LB - driver door trigger

Wires at bulkhead plug / splice P5
    Pin 34 - GY/BK - Brake master cylinder level
    Pin 31 - BK - Parking brake

    At Ignition swith
    BK/RD - Parklamp (test)

Re: Digital dash swap for 1987 Daytona Shelby

You could just install a complete 87 Pacifica dash harness. That would be the best way to do it. The Lancer-GTS cluster is longer and narrower and will not fit in a Daytona-Lebaron J. The mileage does not show when the cluster comes on with the door switch, only the decorative lines in the display light up.

You are going to need the pinouts for your cluster, then you will probably have to take the signals from their respective sources and route them to the cluster. It probably won't be to bad, but it won't be fun either.
