    Lost my only key...

Well I lost my only ignition key, of course. I tried to get another key made at the dealership near my house but it only works on everything but the ignition. Does anyone have an idea of where I can get a new one? Also it kinda looked like my points were filed down on the old key... is it possible someone else had the same problem and filed the points down to get it to work? Or does the locks just wear the points down a little after a while? Thanks for the help, this is the last obstacle in getting my daily driver up and running again.

Did they make it from the VIN? if so, and if it is teh original; lock cylnder it should work. Maybe wiggle it as you try to turn it?

You can get another key made by a locksmith. Some make you take the lock cylinder out (requires removal of the steering wheel and some column guts) and bring it in, others will come do the cmplete job in your driveway. The latter option cost me ~$100 on my Shadow

Yeah they made it from the VIN. It works in all the doors so I'm guessing the lock cylinder may have been replaced? With my old set of keys, there were two keys. One worked the doors only and one worked the ignition only. I tried wiggling it, pulling it out a little, nothing seems to work.

    Re: Lost my only key...

There are only 1/2 as many tumblers in the door and trunk lock cylinders as there are in the ignition. Had a 90 Shadow I bought without keys and learned this after taking everything apart. Might be able to get a new ignition cylinder/ key assembly and swap it in, that's what I ended up doing, bought all the locks out of a buddy's parts car.

Each cylinder has (had) a code on it that the locksmith can make a key to. A good locksmith can sometimes make an "impression" w/o removing teh cylinder if the cylinder is relatively not worn out.

What's the cheapest out of all the ways? I'd rather not spend $100 but if I need a key I need a key....

Cheapest? Buy a lock cylinder w/ key from someone on here and swap it yourself.

How difficult is the swap? Is it easy to mess something up?

No way! just knock all the tumblers out of the cylinder, and reinstall it. It will work with any key, but the doors will still lock, and let's face it, if someone jumps in the car they can have it in no time without a key anyway.

Depends on how mechanically inclined you are. Have you ever pulled asteering wheel and disected the column before?

No, but I pickup on things pretty quickly. I did a head-gasket and turbo swap with no experience and it hasn't blown out yet!

The good thing about Turbo Mopars... they're not worth anything, nobody wants the parts, and people don't know they're any faster than a civic. I don't see why I even bother having locks on my car!

OK well I'll give a couple lock smiths a call tomorrow and if I can't get anyone cheap enough I found a $25 cylinder and two keys on eBay... thanks for all the help everyone!

    Re: Lost my only key...

You may need to get ahold of a security torx bit to get the cylinder out, I think on the 90 Shadow I had to borrow one of those to do the job. They use the torx screws with the post in the middle of the head.
