Your Thoughts on a GT Series Turbo

I want to put a Garrett GT28RS on my GTC. What do you guys think about that? Is it even feasible? I want it because it is such an efficient turbo. Any thoughts?

    I want one bad!
Whats the exact trim you are getting?
You just need the right flange on your manifold or go with a td housing. Im a fan of using the real GT series housing though as that is an integral part of the turbo working as it was designed.

Re: Your Thoughts on a GT Series Turbo

I'm not sure on the trim yet as I just want to find out if I can do it at all. I was thinking of going with a TU header. I'll bet they wouldn't mind making a flange for me for a little extra. I'll have to look at some compressor maps and decide on the trim that will work best. No question though, GT housing.

Isn't that the "disco potato" turbo? If so, I think Frank told me it was too small, iirc.

It sure is. However, Garrett claims you can do 350whp with one which is what I want. I can always go bigger though if I have to. Like I said, I still need to look a the compressor maps.

    Clint,
Here is a rough TM engine setup graphed over the numerous GT28 turbos and the S60. Should make your choice easy....

Frank, that is a freaking great site!

Well, if I'm reading this correctly, the GT2860RS would be the best match? I'm new to reading compressor maps, so please, correct me if I'm wrong. You had the engine size wrong.

    Here's the corrected maps:

    I think I'll be registering.

Although I think your BSFC is a little optimistic, check out this map for the info that you have entered.

Also, here is a setup for something other than an all out Menegon head etc. The super 50 keeps looking better and better.

Thanks for the complement dude! Spent long hours writing the code for that.

Here is the config you should use....

This is much more representative.... however as you will notice, that it isn't any better then a Super60 T3 turbo. As Cordes has pointed it out, you can go with a T04E Super50 with T3 turbine, OR you if you want a GT turbo, go with a GT3076R.

    Sure!

Well, what if were using a head from Lone Wolf or FWD Performance, stronger ignition, Spearco intercooler, 2.5 mandrel intake with open filter, and a 3" mandrel exhaust with a TU header?

I am sure that would change things.

Re: Your Thoughts on a GT Series Turbo

I would bump the BFSC to 0.49 and then peak power to 5900 rpms and redline to 6300rpms with a few other VE changes.... probably this... http://www.squirrelpf.com/turbocalc/...36&map_sel6=79

I was just being obnoctious. It really all depends on your set-up and I'm no expert in the department. I just no what worked on Aaron's car, so I'm running the same.

The one you posted is right at the choke line at the upper RPMs. I don't know that I would set out to spin one that fast.

I hate to keep going to it, but I don't think you will find a nicer map than this.

That is with the same numbers Frank posted, but 350HP. I know that 8valves had great success with his GT series turbo with an awesome head etc. However when we are talking just maps the S50 is always the prettiest looking.

Hmm, so would this be the right turbo?
