Is this stuff on facebook? Frank's picture ban stick is working you hard.

No thoughts to weld the case? Nissan guys do it with success when careful. They do it to help with gear separation, and to avoid removing 5th gear in wilder street/strip setups. 3000gt guys weld very large braces into their cases being careful. Since the Nissan guys do it, you might be able to find somebody local who is comfortable with it.

    Re: BadAss SRT-Z - 2.4L / A568 - Update!!!

I posted the pics from stupid iphone... rust re-posted them form the PC and they seem to work now, at least I see them.

I've thought for many hours to weld the case and add gussets. It depends on what is causing the failure, the case flex or gears breaking. Also, if the case is stiffened in a certain area will that just move the stress area and be worse off?

The two trans failures in August 2012 and August 2014 sheared the teeth off the ring/pinion and up until now it seemed they failed due to fatigue in gear teeth. For the 2014 case coming apart it seemed like the gear failure pushed the case apart. I'll take another look at the 2012 case today to see if it is also cracked right in that same spot...

hmmm. with all these cracked cases, it makes me wonder how many cases we are running are cracked as well.

were these turbo car cases or TBI cars?

I try to get TBI trannies as I know they havent had a hard life lol.

I would say its also an unknown if our cases are already flexing in that location and that added space helps your teeth chip and then murder the gearset. I know your cases were probably recently shimmed so that throws out slop.

    Re: BadAss SRT-Z - 2.4L / A568 - Update!!!

I'm not sure where these two cases come from... I acquired them as empty cases.

The one I assembled last August was a 1991 A568 I got from Jackson that was very corroded outside, but VERY nice inside and worked very well. This is the first crack I found thsi year. The next one I started cleaning was a 1990 A523 with a beautiful case, except the following crack:
    Attachment 55088

This crack being on the lower bell housing could have been from the trans coming out of th ecar and dropping on the floor?

The one I'm going with is from a 1990 A568 that I got in pieces from Dean Stillie (Thanks Dean!) It had soem corrosion and needed soem cleaning but overal the case is in great shape. Whiel cleaning it I noticed one spot on the inside of the lower bellhousing looked cracked! ...But I think it is more from a patch in the casting die as I saw this similar pattern on another case too.

That "crack or patch" looks fine to me but if you're concerned, try sanding it to blend and see if the imperfection can be removed.

I just finished cleaning a 523 case that was corroded pretty badly. I first used degreaser then used chrome wheel cleaner with acid which desolves any corrosion and pressure washed it. I came out nice.
I then primed it and then gave it a couple of coats of Duplicolor aluminum paint.
    The case looks brand new.

Thanks for the second opinion, I think I'm going to roll with it. Interesting idea on the chrome cleaner!

OK, taking a look at an A568 and A555 I noticed some differences, especially in the area that cracked...

Decided to put a hand brake in it before DragWeek... Why didn't I do this years ago!

1992 brake setup had to drill holes in floor and adapt cable ends to 87 Shelby Z rear calipers

Any opinion on the bearing plate?
What clutch/flywheel setup is that? Is it bolt-in or are there mod's to be made? Torque rating? Weight compared to conventional?

    Thanks

I need to take it apart to know for sure on the bearing plate, but I've cracked 4 aluminum stockers and pretty sure this one wont.

ACT Twin Disk. Almost a bolt in for A568. Like 714hp or something. I only got it after the ACT HD plate was slipping, but its not friendly to parts. I forget the weight but it is light!

JD, I think you need to spoil us with some pictures of the under car Ebrake cables.
My Duster still has a disaster of an Ebrake attempt from 9 years ago. It involved using the stock footbrake cable. UGH. Think its been disconnected for 8 years.
