You've been having breakup issues for quite some time now and you've never changed the plug gap? It perplexes me that(with all the great advice/help flowing in this forum)no one has suggested checking that. Hopefully its something that simple and you can put down some clean runs!

I'm also not a big fan of using V groove plugs. In fact, I believe my Crane ignition box recommended not to use V groove type plugs.

Also had a break up issue with the race snowmobile engine when I got out about 300', closed the gap from .018 to .013 and ran perfectly. Won the North eastern Nationals in Maine in it's class.
Good to hear from you Joey! Yeah, gap is on the to do list! I seem to remember that MSD says not to use the split fire plugs, these are not too much different than a regular ground strap

It is totally possible to get bad batches of plugs. I've seen it happen a few times (Champions every time). I don't know how the store that sells the plugs you get receives their inventory, but if it's anything like AZ they come in crates packed with other stuff and who knows what was dropped, bounced, slammed on them.

The white powder coming out from around the body of the plug and the porcelain sounds like there was something that happened to the plugs. I'd try getting the same plugs from a different store. I also agree that the gap is pretty darn big. I've had break-up problems in the past and simply gapping the plugs down got rid of the problem.
I was thinking that too... I use dielectric grease on other cars, but never have on this one. I'll post pics in a bit but the white powder pictured was not there before the run, I think it came out during the run...

Yeah, LOL, ya know I don't recall if someone did, but seriously before now (last year) it was cured by the cam sensor and wiring.

Thanks, I'm hoping for some clean runs at the Nats!

A look in the #2 and #3 plug boots. Notice the cracks. The one looks like it might have some trace of something but really they have been on and off the plugs so many times recently... hmmmm

This is the powder previously mentioned. This is only on the new plugs that run like crap and was not there when I put them in.... the ones with the black crack/carbon marks all over them that run fine do not have this powder

I read that wrong. I thought the carbon tracked plugs were the ones that ran like crap???? WOW!
Usually, they cause the car to run like crap. HMMMMMMMM???

I'm with you, Bryan! Well, seeing the powder and where it's at it looks like those plugs were bad out of the box. It's not all that common (and even less so with NGK), but it happens. I'd try a different source...and don't change anything with the new plugs from the new source that you don't normally do. If the plugs really were the problem, you can narrow it down to just that.

Update... Wires on the way, will grab some new plugs, might try Autoilites that Brian suggested. I used to run those with the 2.2L and had good luck...

    Re: BadAss SRT-Z - 2.4L / A568 - Update!!!

Magnecor... Only cuz they are in stock and I could get this week. Actually talked with them direct and their take on carbon tracking was that it's not usually the plug or wire fault but typically other weak item in ignition system or too much gap. He said I should be able to clean and reuse the wires if u wanted and recommended some silicone grease. I'll keep the wires and maybe of a b2b once it's running well just to see. I didn't get into the details of the bad plugs running better than the new ones but plan to write NGK about those.

Edit to add... Plan to talk to Firecore50 at the Nats

    Re: BadAss SRT-Z - 2.4L / A568 - Update!!!

Maybe try the Denso version of whatever NGK is selling you. I ran the Denso version of Simon's favorite plug because that is what AZ carried and was easier to pick up in a pinch. I agree that powder kinda looks like something being wrong with the plug. If they don't behave the same or get damaged the same, they are not the same. I would not be happy with NGK in that situation. You might consider making changing out plugs a regular thing if you find some cheap ones that work. A lot of guys just above your HP level go through plugs quite fast. They are probably going a little harder on the ignition side of things but its something to be prepared for if you keep upgrading spark.

I wonder how hard it would be to find a none resistor plug to try .
What was the resistance though the good and bad plugs

Not sure that would be a good idea. Non-resister plugs usually don't play nice with electronics... whether it be ignition or EFI...

    Re: BadAss SRT-Z - 2.4L / A568 - Update!!!

Bought 2 sets of Autolite's and one of Autolite racing just in case it didn't like the extended tip plugs.

Put on new set of Magnecor R100 wires and set of Autolite's gapped to 0.022"

Also installed 2 stage boost... So Cordes, I think I changed 5 things, is that enough?

First pass, launch off 2step, snap! driver side inner tripod joint split in two ... First time for this one, also on the 24.5's wtf? First driver side axle I've broke since the first one broke on 26's and different failure mode too hmmm

Second pass, raise tire pressure a little. leave without 2step on low boost. Spin in first and second shift third, turn up boost, car pulls hard and gets out of the groove to the left. 11.13 @ 137... Was 23psi for low and over 30 for high.

Lowered both boost levels. Will try again tomorrow

    Re: BadAss SRT-Z - 2.4L / A568 - Update!!!

Breaking an axle must put you back to thinking about what you are giving up on your E.T. for a car that still breaks. I think you of all cars would benefit from driveline preload with a staging brake. If cars that are lighter with less power on the same tire will destroy axles on the hit then you don't have a lot of positive things to look forward to except hoping your nice axles save you. I am only going to clutch my way out of bogs in the future rather than shockload my driveline and hope it holds together. I think the only difficult thing with that is cutting a good light. Thats why its easier with a staging brake.

Its just 1 decent pass but it sounds like your ignition system is definitely not as robust as it was the previous years.
