    Rear camber

Is the rear camber angle built into the axle or the spindles?

I put the "big brakes" on my Shelby Z the other weekend, and now I have some serious negative camber in the back. I installed a plastic shim that came from the donor car, but there's still a lot more camber than there was with the old setup.

So are the spindles angled, or just the axle? I'm kinda thinking the spindles are, which would explain the offset bolt pattern.

You add and remove shims to do the alignment.

I know.. What I'm asking is, which part is angled.. the axle or the spindle?

There's a built-in camber in the rear axle/spindles, and the shims are added to remove some of the exceessive rear camber that the parts were manufactured with.

Maybe your other parts were bent? the spindle and backing plate are perfectly parallel with each other, so theres no camber built in. If theres any angle, its built into the axle flange.

    Re: Rear camber

Must be the axle, then. There's definitely camber built into something in the back. I remember reading that at first they came without shims, but then due to excessive tire wear, the shims were introduced to take out some of the camber.

Maybe I'll check the spare axle I have sitting in the garage. Lay it on the garage floor and see if the flange is perpendicular to the floor.

The spindles I took off had some kind of rusted up something behind them.. probably some type of shim. One thing's for certain, the car had way less camber with the old stuff on.

    Re: Rear camber

One side of mine was ok camber and toe wise. The other side I had to add a shim. I put the spindles on with no shims then took it to the alignment shop and had them set it up the way I wanted it. Which is 0 toe and -1.0 degrees of camber in each side. EXACT! No oh it's close enough BS.

my '90 VNT P-body axle didn't come with shims and the '90 VNT G-body axle didn't either. But, I have an R/T brake setup in the garage and that has shims. (junkyard torched the axles right off for the brakes)

They didn't come with them from the factory, you have to put them in if needed when doing an alignment.

Or, you can buy Omnipotent's 1/4" track widening plates and mill camber/toe into those.
