    Nozzle size?

    I will be installing water injection on my 85 T-1 suck through 2.2 engine this week. I have 4 different size nozzles sitting on my desk currently. I have 2GPH, 3GPH, 4GPH, and 5GPH nozzles. This will be a simple 2 stage system.

    What size combinations should I use to allow my engine to boost to 15psi and when should each stage activate?

    The problem with my nozzles is they must thread in from the inside and that will not be easy to do inside the intake manifold. I plan to grind off the flats from the tip of the nozzle to allow it to thread in from the outside. Another issue is the nozzles have a large metal filter on their inlet. This filter is so long it will not thread into the inside of my quick connect fittings. I will go out tomorrow and try to find some deeper female ended quick connect fittings.

    Hopefully I bought the correct size nozzles in GPH. They are all from McMaster by the way.

    I used water injection with success on my 86 T1. I don't really have advice for you on what size nozzle to use, but I will tell you that I had my nozzle on the throttle body before the compressor inlet. That would make changing nozzles much easier.

    Perhps I will try installing the nozzle before the throttle plate then. I am wondering if that will be harmful to the turbo. It would make sense that the turbo would atomize the water even better and allow equal distribution to all cylinders.

    Contraption22, were you able to turn the boost much higher on your T1? And how much power do you think you were making?

    I was able to run 18psi with no knock on pump gas using 50/50 methanol and water. No idea on the power. But I was running high 13's with traction problems.

    Morris engines who makes 1740 HP on pump gas BBC setups runs alky/water/something into the inlet of the supercharger, as well as at the (yikes!) carb venturi as well.

    Food for thought.

    I got the pump, relay, fuse, pressure switch, and nozzle installed today. Currently the only nozzle installed is a 3GPH@100psi. I will post pictures up sometime soon when I get it working. I still need to find a good tank to hold the water/alcohol. I will add more nozzles later when I figure out how big a nozzle size is necessary. The cool thing is I have enough extra parts to build a 3 stage system.

    I run these nozzles, 1 300 cc/min. Still waiting for D.O. to come out with their own external thread nozzles.

    Still worken on the dam things. Never knew such a simple part was going to take way so long. I started this new design almost a year ago.

    I got the system working well as a 2 stage system currently. The 1st nozzle (2gph) comes on around +4psi and the second one (4gph) around +10psi. The pump cycles on and off to maintain about 100psi of water.

    I had to add a flow control solenoid right at the nozzle itself to stop the nozzle immediately when the throttle is lifted. It would misfire when the throttle is closed and opened quickly before I added the solenoids.

    It is still quite a crude setup since it does not compensate for outside air temp, RPMs, or altitude. I am still thinking about ways to make a more advanced precise water injection setup perhaps using flex fuel injectors and megasquirt.

    For now it works good enough and it is making a whole lot more power than it was and I am using cheap 87 octane with no pinging and before it would ping lightly with 92 octane.

    Here are some pictures of my water injection. Because of the freezing weather I am using Autozone valucraft windshield washer fluid for the system instead of water.

    did you use airvalve as solenoid ? i have some laying around in the garage seems to be a good idea!

    The solenoid valves are actually designed for liquids. The valve is actuated by an electromagnetic coil. The solenoids are from mcmaster.

    I need to post some new pictures because I have since converted the car to T2 status. I installed the injector nozzles in the upper intercooler hose. I ended up using a 4gph @100psi nozzle that activates around 6psi and a 4gph nozzle that comes on around 11psi.

    The system works fairly well for a daily driver but I cant seem to keep the thing from having a slight misfire when slowly letting out of throttle from a boosted condition. For example if the car is accelerating at 1/2 throttle and the boost is up to 12psi then I let out to 1/4 throttle and the boost stays around 9 psi then the car will start to missfire until the boost drops down under 6psi and the injectors shut off. It will also stumble a little when climbing a slight hill on the highway with 1/8 throttle and the boost barely climbs to the injector turn on point. I have tried smaller nozzles and higher set points but then I have to dial back some timing or dial in more fuel to stop detonation. I guess a more intelligent control that is RPM and Load sensitive vs. manifold pressue sensitive is needed.
