Exclamation Never Buy A Rebuilt Master Cylinder-please!!!!!!!

I am posting this as some people are still under the impression that saving a few dollars is worth it, its NOT. Rebuilt master cylinders will fail either right away or very soon, this can either result in a chuckle or a deadly crash. They should be outlawed but for some reason there not.

So for the life of you and your passengers, the people on the road, BUY a NEW one, there pennies more. I bought a brand new one for $18 at www.rockauto.com.

Its common knowledge in the auto industry. They should be outlawed.

You can sometimes get away with it on the older cast iron type but the aluminum ones, nope.

Its been brought up on this forum many times also, people having issues with rebuilts.

Please add this to the knowledge center somewhere!!!!!!
I agree from 40 years ago. Most often when the fail, it is without the usual warning signs. Just NO BRAKES!!!!!!
A new one usually gives some warning signs when it starts going after many years of service. Believe it or not, I managed a tire center many years ago. We would let a customer leave before installing a rebuilt mc.

I've lost many a job for refusing to install one or supply one on my customers cars.

I stickied it in this section, it will get more traffic here than in the KC,

    Ouch! that sucks...

I found that "re-built" makes a big difference on the manufacturer. I put a re-built one in my Dak and I went to every autro parts store chain by my house before I picked one. I saw it all... crazy stuff... one that was so beat up io would feel bad turning it in as a core... even saw one that was cast iron instead of cast aluminum!

Manufacture of a new one makes a difference too... in the end, it is still a crap shoot whether a re-built one is better than a new one from China.

I agree, ANY rebuilt hydraulic brake parts should be outlawed !!!!!! Should also have much tighter regulation on new parts as well. Outlaw ANYTHING made in China. But on the other hand they do make good fireworks.

I also agree that it's a crap shoot. Recently I saw 2 brand new Ford MC's be bad before trying a re-man Motorcraft that worked.

I still have to pick up my Cardone one, but so far, every Cardone product I've bought, has been US made.

Re: Never Buy A Rebuilt Master Cylinder-please!!!!!!!

I had a minivan come in the shop with locked up rear brakes and found the master cyl. to be the problem. i installed two different remans on and it had the same problem. i started to look elsewhere for a problem and decided to go with a new unit, i think from napa. well guess what? fixed it and thats been a few years now. i do not own the shop, i only work here but we try to get the customer to go with new parts rather than rebuilt.

I've seen BRAND NEW master cylinders fail also, there is no full proof method for master cylinders. I personally see no issue in either new, or remanned.

Re: Never Buy A Rebuilt Master Cylinder-please!!!!!!!

The main reason to not buy a re-built master cylinder is the fact that you have to hone it back to round, before a new, over-sized seal can be expected to work at all. Most master cylinders these days are aluminum which is pretty soft, so in order to make it work, OEM suppliers will hard anodize them, and it works great, the problem comes from the need to hone a used unit, in the process you remove the anodizing. Given all the short cuts re-builders take, you can bet they don't re-anodize them. So what you are left with is a unit that (at best) won't last, even if it's rebuilt very carefully, which is wishful thinking. Can you rebuild a cast iron unit? Sure! Will you get a reliable unit from a rebuilder? Not likely, and therefore not worth the small amount of $$ you might save. If you have to replace it just once, you just wasted more of your time than that little bit of extra $$ you "saved" the 1st time.

Brakes and steering are two places you just don't take chances with.
