WalMart Oil and Mobil 1 loss of power

    Hi,

Has anyone else tried SuperTech Full synthetic 5W30 oil? This is for my chrysler Laser T1 btw.

The reason I ask is I also drive a Suzuki Swift with a 1.0 and I have been using M1 5W30 and then to save money last week I changed to SuperTech 5W30 synthetic. When I started the engine cold I noticed it idled quite a bit slower. It also felt much less powerful when cold. By the time it warmed up I could not tell the difference because I got accustomed to the loss of power. These little 1.0 engines notice if anything robs power. The car becomes slow even if a tire is underinflated.

The Suzuki engine really loved M1 5W20 that I had in last summer. The only reason I went to 5W30 is because the 5W20 made the pistons louder when the engine was cold (piston slap).

It could be that the M1 5W30 got thinned out because it was 6months old and that is why the engine had so much extra power.

For my Laser though it still has conventional oil in it. But should I try SuperTech synthetic oil? Has anyone else tried it in a turbo engine? Maybe mobile1 would be worth the extra cost because it will be thin and cause better fuel economy. I will be going to 5W30 btw unless I can find some 0W30 at a cheap enough price.

I use the Walmart brand synthetic oil in my Jimmy and love it. Cheap, it works and stays clean, what more could you ask for.

I switched from Valvoline or GTX, I don't remember, to Mobil 1 and notice an increase in power. I'd go for Mobil 1 personally, it's worth the extra $1 or 2 a quart.

I used Supertech 10w-30 on my Daytona Shelby, it kept my rebuilt head looking new, even after 35k miles! $13 for 5qt, hard to beat the price.

Too bad I no longer shop at Walmart.

Re: WalMart Oil and Mobil 1 loss of power

I had it in an N/A Escort, the 0W30 stuff though and it ran great, put 10K on it, then the headgasket blew, got into the engine, the oil was still looking like the day I put it in, and everything under the valvecover was real clean. Don't think it had much to do with the HG, when I hit the headbolts they were barely more than hand tight. but it was a 200K motor, (still tight as a ducks arse though) so musta been age + thermal cycling. Either that or some eejut was in it and didn't torque them right.

Anyhoo in that motor, I got more power, better mpg, quieter, smoother and cooler running, over conventional oil, was very impressed.

Only thing I'd figure is that maybe supertech is a true 5W when cold and the Mobil is more like a 3 or something. I used the 0W.

They have dyno tested oils before but they usually replace ALL the oils and pick up a few HP. I honestly bet you can't tell the difference switching from oils. The only time I would you would is a 50 hp car and 3-5 hp you will notice but a boosted engine, I doubt it.

when I have a rebuilt engine I'll put the cheap stuff in, but after the first 500 miles I'll put M1 in cause I notice a difference, a little smoother and less engine noise. But I also just recently switched to a diesel oil cause a body told me about it and I noticed a hugh difference over the M1 because it has a bunch of lubs in it that they don't put into car oil, and it only cost like less then a dollar more a qt. I can't remember what it was called.

If you've rerung your engine, put 3000 miles on it before switching to synthetic. Yep, Diesel oils have more additives due to the high compression and low speed running vs a gas engine. Much better oils and its been proven.

I just put some M1 0W20 in my suzuki and it runs so much better than the wal -mart 5W30 synthetic. It is amazing how much more power it has. Then I put full synthetic supertech 5W30 in my Laser and the turbo seems to spool faster than with 10W30 pennzoil when the engine is cold. Maybe next time my laser will get M1 0W20 too!

Not as much anymore. The zinc has been legislated out of the new SM rated diesel oils. They're replacing it with moly and some other lubes but still not nearly as good as it was before the huge ZDDP reductions. Not really an issue for these motors, but for us guys who still run flat tappet cams like in my 440 and other conventinal V8's this has been a huge issue. FWIW, I'm running amsoil these days. It costs a little more, but it's not like I put on much mileage or change the oil every month or something.

Rotella 15w40 still has zinc. IMO Amsoil is crap. You would be better with Royal Purple if you wann go that route.

Why do you say that about Amsoil, that stuff is awesome in my race bike and saved my trans years ago.

I really havent seen anything as to where its any better than conventional. Also the crap where you go like 10k and dont change the oil just the filter doesnt fly in my book. I have seen a couple engines fail because of that.

Re: WalMart Oil and Mobil 1 loss of power

I must say that I have been using the Walmart brand and notice a bit of a lumpy idle upon starting up and being cold. If it's a motor that I've just had redone, no questions, I use the M1. If just a daily driver, gotta go with the Walmart brand, especially since its so cheap. I think 5 qts. of it cost me $7 last week when I changed oils. This is the stuff in the blue jug you're talking about right?
