I don't think anyone is too worried about someone having an unscrupulous lock smith or dealer (who would normally require proof of ownership) make them a key based on the VIN, heck most of our cars are too old for the dealer to do that anyway. I'm not sure how may years they keep the info, but it's likely less than 10! That plus the fact that we are so spread out over the country, if it did happen, it would have to be an inside job!
