Yea, I'd like to see a pic too as I am thinking of doing the same thing.

Was racing this wknd, so I just saw this now. I plug the H/C hole in the front of the head with the apropriate size plug, leave the thermostate untouched, pull the frost plug out of the end of thr head and the hole is the perfect size for the tap I use. I think it's 1', but I'd have to check. Then I put a 1' down to 3/4 adapter and wind the 3/4 brass 5/8 barb fitting in. Just make sure you use some good sealer and make it tight! I'll snap some shots today and get them up tonight.

O.K. cool. You can see where the 5/8 hose goes into the #4 frostplug.

This next one should show you the side of the head that goes into the H/C.

    Re: #4 cooling done differently

Guess I kind of did this backwards, but I'm sure you guys get it. The side of the head into the H/C and plug the whole under the thermostate housing is one mode (work good to around 325whp) and the hose from the waterpump to the #4 frost plug is a second mode for HP above that. This is where I tap the water pump for the 5/8 hose.

Shadow I really like your setup and started a mock up on my spare head, in your pic it appears that your BOV is in the lower intercooler hose. Is that correct ? Funny I was thinking of doing that as well.

Ya, started doing that a few years ago. Didn't make sense to me, having it on the cold side and loosing velosity after the I/C. + what are you trying to save here....the turbo! By the time you alleviate the preasure from the upper pipe, preasure in the lower one has already pushed back on the compressor wheel. Be carefull though. Depending on the pr drop across your I/C you will need a BOV that holds more preasure!

Also, when you guys get the right NPT tap for the end of the head, run it till it hits the back inside chamber. Go slow and keep it straight. The whole is actually a little big, but if you tap it that deep it will work good. The water pump is a little more tricky, as it's thin and on an angle. If you tap it and use a fitting, use some serious grey anerobic sealer and it should be good. I've started tigging ends on now.

Made my head-heater core plug last night. Just welded a bolt ino the huge pipe fitting so that I could still use that port if I wanted to (as in thought about welding the head shut there but decided against.

Good idea, saves the time and effort of trying to find a pipe plug that size.

Thats for damned sure. I was like, where the hell will a find a plug for that. Then the answer came in the form of rumaging through my cyl head parts box and finding like 4 donor 'could be' plugs.

You can get a plug for around 1-2 bucks at almost any HW store. Home depo has them for sure.

The power and gas to weld it was probably more, but buying a plug is no fun.

Got the 3/4 brass pipe plug alright but can't find a 1" NPT tap to tread the freeze plug hole, gonna find a plumber to tap it out. Going with a brass elbow facing the firewall, mocking up a brairded stainless steel oil feed line to clear the elbow. Being that I work in a hot rod shop this type of work is done on a daily bases.

Tapping the hole with a 1" TAP has some problems. I did it that way but wouldn't do it again...

The TAP is available in an NPT tap kit from harbor freight if you really want to do it but here are the problems:

    • The hole is slightly too big for the 1" tap.
    • The tap will bottom out in the head before you get it deep enough.
    • It is next to impossible to get the tap straight since the hole is slightly too large to give you a nice bite.

I ended up using JB weld on the threads to make sure that it sealed.

This is why I recommend the VW outlet with the oring.

You deff have to take your time starting it to keep it straight, but really no problem. If you go till it hits the head (inside) it will thread in nicely and all I've ever used is some anerobic sealant or equivelent and no leaks. Although, if there's a better way.....give'r!
