What clearance to run with my Venolia's?

The spec sheet says .005-.007 and this spec is for racing use, your clearance maybe be different soooooooooooooo what should I use, 99% daily driver with high boost drag racing in the summer. I would lean towards .0045 to .005" What do you think?

Stick with the specs. I wouldn't go under .005.

I've seen what happens to and engine when someone decides to make clearances tighter than what the manufacturer recommended.....Things get real tight!....And stop.

I agree but the spec given is for a race engine, not a DD.

I'd go with the nominal dimension. Venolia's are supposed to grow a lot with heat.

Yeah, I was thinking .005" to be on the safe side.

Simon, do you know if Venolia pistons use the same retaining clip as our OEM pistons?

Re: What clearance to run with my Venolia's?

I have about double the recommended clearance on the Venolias in the CSX, due to a dumb miscalculation when I ordered them back in '98. They are very loud at startup. Once they are nice and toasty, the motor is pretty quiet. That should give you an idea about how much they grow. I've got over 35k very hard miles on this motor. Compression is not the best due to the piston flopping, I think, but it runs and makes good power. Drove it daily for years.

No, the stockers are a circlip and the Venolia's have the spirolocks.

"The sole condition which is required in order to succeed in centralizing the supreme power in a democratic community, is to love equality, or to get men to believe you love it. Thus the science of despotism, which was once so complex is simplified, and reduced . . . . to a single principle."
    -- Alexis de Tocqueville

"One of the methods used by statists to destroy capitalism consists in establishing controls that tie a given industry hand and foot, making it unable to solve its problems, then declaring that freedom has failed and stronger controls are necessary."
    --Ayn Rand

"To evolve, you don't need a Constitution. All you need is a legislature and a ballot box . . . . things will evolve as much as you want. All of these changes can come about democratically; you don't need a Constitution to do that and it's not the function of a Constitution to do that."

    Simon,

Stop trying to reinvent the wheel. Use those specs... there's no reason to go tighter because it's a "daily-driver". These little gains you're looking for pale in comparison to your 80,000 RPM stall converter anyway... just build the motor and get her back to the track!

I am not, lol. Instructions say for race duty, .005-.007", for other uses, the specs may or may not apply hence my question.

Re: What clearance to run with my Venolia's?

I may be taking chances, but I'm installing a set of venolias with about .004 clearance, that's all I can get with alot of honing. The guy who sold them to me said that he's been running a set with .003 clearance, running 30psi of boost, and hasn't had any problems yet so lets see what happens. By the way my car is gona be a daily driver also.

There forged, that's why. There's also JE which I have run and loved them, they took a beating from me and lived, except when a valve ended their life prematurely. There's Wiseco, Diamond and Ross. Lots to chose from. I went with Venolia's as Cindy had them in stock after waiting for Wiseco to make mine for 6 months and nothing,

Re: What clearance to run with my Venolia's?

I'm getting ready to assemble the motor back together, I actually have about .005 clearance all around. My question now is that the STD size rings give me about .030 end gap, is that too much or should I file fit a set of oversized rings. I have a set of 0.020 oversize rings lying around.
