    First and reverse... thats it.

I was talking to a guy at work today, and he has a 3.0 spirit, with a 3 speed auto. Anyways, he said it will go into 1st gear and drive fine, but wont shift out of 1st. He said reverse works fine too. I am thinking of picking it up and trying to fix the tranny. I'm thinking it might just have a hung up valvebody? what does it sound like to you guys?

    thanks
    Dustin

had that happen on a rental. Chrysler had to totally rebuild the trans.

Sounds like a governor problem if it won't shift out of 1st. Good first step is drop the pan, clean it out good, change the filter and fluid. If you can take the governor apart in the car (can't remember on a 413, been a long time) clean it out *GOOD* and reassemble.

he said it is nice and tight and first and reverese, no sliping, just wont shift. I was thinking it was the valve body, where is the governer at?

Inside the case on the output shaft. I'll have to look in my shop manual to see if it's accessible w/o having to drop the trans. Like I said, been a VERY long time since I looked in an A413.

When the governor screws up, you get to start in 2nd gear. Going thru my book, it looks like you have a front clutch and band issue. Its time to tear it down or just get a known good used one.

It could still be a governor issue if a bunch of crap is stuck behind the upshift valve in the governor. If the governor was directing fluid into the valve body for 2nd gear I would think that it'd try to shift and would slip or freewheel if the front clutch/band was suspect. Not getting 2nd at all would point to a governor, shift valve or TV cable issue to me.

Either way, drop the pan, adjust the bands, change the fluid and filter, check for any debris in the bottom of the pan and adjust the TV cable and see if that helps.

You could try that, I bet when the pan is dropped, it will be full of crap,

Run it up to about 20mph and throw it in park and back to drive. Not a permanent fix but will let you know the problem is the governor. Governor can be accessed by dropping the pan and pulling the valve body.

I just went thru a 413 from my '86 woody wagon. Like turbovanman says, there are 2 bands in these trannys. Low/reverse and the kickdown band. Sounds like a kickdodwn band problem.

Check the fluid level with the car warmed up (on level ground) If it is low it could be causing all sorts of problems. Next would be to adjust the kickdown band. It is the easy one to get at on top of the tranny. If that doesn't do it, time to drop the pan. You may find the kickdown band strut there....
