you turn on the headlights on and the tailights go out..... you turn the headlights off and the tailights work. what would cause this and what should i check? if it makes a difference its 3.0, auto with pretty much all power options.
thanks

The taillights lost their ground. If they all went, might be the central grounding point in the trunk. Otherwise it's usually the sockets.
+1 for ground. They're finding their ground through the front park lights. If you turn off just the headlights and leave the parks on what happens?
In my 88 what i ended up doing was grounding each socket to its own ground, mine did weird stuff too. Also pull the h/l switch and make sure that the switch and the connector aernt melted, sometimes the melt and get all goofy, should be a big plug with like 8 spades on it.
headlight switch on my '90 Shadow did something similar. Headlights worked, but no dash and no tailights except when I braked...I think.. years ago.
