removing turbo brace bolt in car

A NEW GM box end is rounding the head. No room for socket. No room for grinder except mini die grinder. sawzall stroke would be too long with limited clearance.
Air chisel? I'm an artist with these. Acetylene torch?

The only way I see is to waste the bolt head since the nut is welded on the back side of the brace.

BTW I can't find the die grinder or the air chisel.

Grind out a 9/16 12 point to fit better?

The bolt when new is 15mm but due to heat, wear etc, a 9/16 will usually fit nicely, use a 6 point. You need to use heat first then try to remove it, if that doesn't work, I either leave it on when pulling the head or vice grips. Heat is critical.

Remove the intermediate shaft and use a 6 point socket on it.

Re: removing turbo brace bolt in car

15 mm is right but a 12 point box end was rounding it. I was thinking of opening up a 9/16 box end a little to go on really tight.

I should have mentioned this is for replacing the starter. The head is not coming off.

"Remove the intermediate shaft and use a 6 point socket on it."
this got me to thinking. I could get a socket on it, but the metal pipe for the drain back from the turbo is blocking the ratchet.

I'm going to try the 9/16 box end opened up just enough to hammer it on.
Somebody needs to make a 6 point box end ratchet.

That bolt is a PITA, I just dealt with one in the JY. I used and open end 11/16 on it if I recall. Soak it with PB Blaster, if that doesn't get it, maybe try a punch & hammer to get it started. Pretty tight area to work in, best of luck!

Take the tube off and use 6 pt socket on it.

Whatever you do, do not use a 12 pt, It's just going to round the head even more.

    Yup.

Cheese move if it doesn't come off is to remove the bolt at the block, then pull up on the brace and it will pivot out of the way.

I would just hammer on the socket or wrench after I used some heat on it.

And the winner is Snapon 14/15 mm box end 6 point ratchet with 1" pipe slipped on for breaker bar.
Last pic is the cause of the grief.

Re: removing turbo brace bolt in car

The starter is a little gone.

Use HIGH temperature anti-seize if you don't want that bolt to seize up again.
I have some for sale, if you're interested.

Re: removing turbo brace bolt in car

My old SBC (Pappy Taylor of Weld Racing fame) mentor always told me never-ever use a 12-pt socket on anything automotive and I've never since rounded a bolthead in 45 years.

Yep, 12 points are good for 2 things, the garbage can and driving taps.

Don't forget to buy a DEI heat shield, it just wraps around the starter and you can do it with it in the car,

Re: removing turbo brace bolt in car

    Update.....................

the bolt head in question slipped right in a 9/16 open end. The battery was dead in 2 days sitting in the battery tray unconnected. O Reilly replaced it free without receipt. The starter I stuck in is BAD!!!! Why didn't I check it??
thanks on the heat shield tip. I have a new mopar somewhere.......
I need to check the voltage on the starter wire before I pull it.
AND nobody shows a 6 point box end ratchet in 15mm. Not even snapon even though I used one.
