Thread: 287 head modded for 11mm bolts...

Question 287 head modded for 11mm bolts...

Does anyone know if a 287 head, which has had the bolt holes opened up for use on a CB with 11mm head bolts - would still work on a '85 T1 with 10mm bolts? Would a sleeve be required?

It will work just fine. No sleeves required.

They sometimes just fit other times I have just ran a 7/16 drill bit through the holes to give enough room for 11mm head bolts on the older heads.

He's doing it the other way around Rich, the head has been drilled out for 11mm's and he wants to put it back on a engine with 10mm bolts.

    It will work just fine.

Oops I should read more carefully...

If you are doing a full rebuild then retap the block for 11mm otherwise I agree the 10mm will work most of the heads were already big enough for 11mm bolts anyway!

Thanks guys...I bought this head to use on a 2.5 CB project for another car, but my brother's 85 1/2 XT developed a 'need'...

In fact, one of Matt's first ported exhaust mannies is still waiting to go on that 2.5, I think that's my nasty core in the 'before' view in your sig!

Just remember, the head bolts don't locate the head to the block, there are 2 dowel pins in the block that locate the head so the head bolt holes can be 3/4 of an inch,

The head would offset on the block/gasket, causing the gasket to blow pre-maturely.
