    Axle fit issues....

So we finally get the newly rebuilt 413 trans in TurboShadow's 88 Shadow ES.

Long / short axles, same one's that came out, same nose/speedo drive on the RH side, same bearing support on the left side.

The OE trans suffered a diff pin exit hole, so a different case, and All this went into an 89 diff with new diff pin and retainers. This was from an 89 Lebaron or Daytona parts car, can't remember what one this unit was from.

Problem is it leaks fluid on both sides of the diff, as if the axles were not seated fully in the diff.... Like the splined end is too long and botoming out....

Everything I know says 88 / 89 diffs are the same, but something funny is going on here....

    Ideas??

Didn't put the speedo drive cable in before you put the axle in did you? (presuming the '88 was mechanical, thought the electrical started in '89) that would stop long side seating, and maybe engine shift is stopping the other.

Yeah I know, but we gotta cover all the "doh!" stuff...

From glancing over the seal replacement stuff lately I have an idea the seals have to be driven in pretty firmly, if they're just sitting on the edge that might make a difference.

But it's the *same* parts that came out - axles, seals, snout on the right, bearing carrier on the left side, just a new diff.

Seems as if the inside splined end of the axle is too long, or the splines are not *long* enough to let the axles in to seal...??

88 and 89 diffs are the same, right???

    This one has me stumped.....

87 and up diffs are the same. Maybe the seals got damaged during install or the garter spring popped off the inside?

Is there a possibility that each axle got kinda worn in and seated to it's side gear, and they're sitting the other way round???

    Re: Axle fit issues....

    Fixed it!!!!!

Driver's side axle had some boogering where the diff came apart, between the splines and the seal area.

So the axle was'nt seating fully in the diff or the seal itself.

    Yaaaay, it all works!!!

    Thanks for the input.....
