    Throw out bearing?!

Before I left for vacation a week ago my car had been making a kinda grinding sound that I though was the throw out bearing. The previous owner said he replaced it so I had didn't think that was the problem. So after comming home from vacation this week I was driving my car and this grinding sound started sounding like a crunching sound which I knew wasn't good. Tonight after going to the movies that crunching sound turned into a very loud squealing and screeching. I can start to feel it in the clutch pedal so I know it is just that the throw out bearing. Man do I love this car! So how hard is it to replace one on these cars? I have replaced one on another FWD car a few years ago and it really sucked. It was an escort but hopefully this one should be easier. Any good tips? What do you guys recommend for replacement parts? What clutch should I go with? Recommend a alum. flywheel? Does anyone have a write up or something on this? Thanks for the tips. My Dad was saying that he had a Vega one time that it went threw throw out bearing all the time and it was because of the clutch cable was stretched and it drag the bearing. Do you think that is why mine keeps going? This is on a 88 Shelby Z with a A555

Ok you say 88 dodge daytona, It shouldn't be a problem to change a Throw out bearing nor is it hard to change a clutch. Its just time consuming and nerve jumping i have done it a few times on my 88 lebaron turbo with a daytona setup and after a while its a breeze. my tip is to take your time and remember were everything goes and double check your torquing bolts and make sure you know what your doing. If your leaving your car stock or a lil mild i recommend a stock Shelby flywheel and clutch kit from the dealer or TU or FWDperformance. The Shelby clutch has a little more kavlar then the TI setups and has a great bit and the clutch is butter and it wont wear and tear on you clutch cable or throw out bearing.
and aluminum flywheels isn't good for street. something to do with torque loss issues
    good luck.

With that being a relatively new TOB, I'd definitely check the input shaft bearings in the trans too. I've had them go and they make an aweful ear-splitting screeching noise when they get really bad.

yeah but I am pretty sure it is the TOB because right now when the clutch is in it makes a slight high pitched very quiet squeal but when you push on the pedal to let the clutch out it just howls. It is terrible.

    Re: Throw out bearing?!

Ok just about to button it all up tomorrow night after replacing the clutch and T/O bearing. I was wondering

    1) Do both shifter cables use the same size snap ring keepers? You know the part that snaps over the collar on the cable to hold it in the bracket. I broke both of them and I can't find one

2)What would be the best break in process for the clutch?

    3) How do you recommend to get the tranny lube back in there? Do you just pull the rubber plug on the side of the steel cover on the driver side of the car?

    1. yes, and I believe they are available at the dealer for a reasonable price.

    2. take it easy on it for a while.

    3. I remove the plug, jack up the driver's side, and use a funnel with a hose on it to fill it.

i would give it about 1,000 miles or so and the best way to calculate it is by your tripometer (the one below you odometer) start it at zero and dont reset it until it reaches the mileage you looking for and DO NOT HAMMER on it for the first time and do lots of city driving, its the best cause of stop and go traffic.

    Re: Throw out bearing?!

A new clutch won't hold as good until it's properly broken in. It's really easy to overpower a new clutch which will make it slip and generate alot of heat which will ruin it. In addition to what's posted above, my advice is to hook your wastegate can straight to vacuum, or turn your boost controller all the way down so that you only get 5-7 psi until the clutch is broken in. This will reduce the chance of having any problems.

I do all city driving so that shouldn't be a problem. After work I will search for the clips and see who sells them.

    Re: Throw out bearing?!

Yay!!! got it running!!!!! Haha 6hrs to take out 3 days to put back in? Everything is good except for the gear shift. I took off the column to readjust the shifter and when I was putting it back together I broke the tabs that hold the reverse collar to the shaft in the middle of the shifter. I am going to try to just put some super glue on it for a temp fix until I can get a new collar. Is there somewhere I can get that part. It is the part the you pull up on to let the shifter into reverse.

    Re: Throw out bearing?!

You might check a dealer, but it's likely to be NS1 (discontinued). If that's the case, your best bet would be a parts wanted ad here, or check your local junkyard. You might end up having to buy a complete shifter though. Shouldn't be too much...
