Motor starts with fuel injectors not plugged in.

So on my 3.0 I have had a problem with #1 plug not combusting correctly (or at all..)

I pulled plugs 1 and 3 (still 2,4,5,6 pluged in) and put the spark plug boots back on the plugs to see if both were firing. I unplugged the fuel injector harness.

Anyways amidst my testing the engine decided to start.

So it started on 4 of 6 cylinders without the fuel injector harness plugged in.

Cylinders 2,4,5,6 are combusting properly when the injectors are plugged in.
This leads me to believe that fuel injectors are leaking BUT this doesnt really solve my #1 cylinder issue....it just seems to me to be another problem.

Im not really sure what to trouble shoot for now.

I am going to go start removing plugs and looking to see which ones are currently "cumbusting" when the injectors are not plugged in.
    -------------------
    More info.

I just pulled the last 4 plugs. Plug #5 is dry
plug #2 has a little wetness on one side

Plug 4 & 6 are soaked. So I know at least those 2 injectors must be misbehaving

    -------------
Just checked injectors and they are all reading 15.6 ohms

    ------------
Removed fuel rail and none of the injectors are leaking when i prime the fuel system.

So I have no idea what the problem is

Is it possible #1 injector is REALLY leaking and causing a rich/unburnt condition? Thats that darndest thing I've heard

Re: Motor starts with fuel injectors not plugged in.

Im really confused by it all.

THe injectors would not leak when Pulled them and put pressure to them

I was thinking that the extra vacuum of the engine trying to start would bring out the fuel but that doesnt make much sense, this motor has almost no vacuum below 1000 rpms because of the cams (aka @ 300-400 rpms there should be almost no pull on the injectors).

If I put the car back together Im back to square 1 having found out no new information.

Is it possible that some of the injector were in the open position and the pump was spraying through them . If it didn't run long it may have been unburnt fuel in the cylinder.

Well it would run, die, run die, then keep wanting to start.

Usually when I have extra fuel in the cylinder it burns right off....doesnt keep being an issue.

Some of them have to be leaking. No other explanation.

I just went out for shits and grins and unplugged the injector harness on my lebaron (3.0). It hit for about a second and died.

Re: Motor starts with fuel injectors not plugged in.

Well these are 30# injectors that I just wanted to use for "temporary"
I need high impendence injectors. I dont want to invest again in some injectors which I wont keep.
Why in the world are they leaking when I turn it over but not when I remove the fuel rail. Is there some other test I can do?

The only other injectors I have are stock 19#'s and some newly refurbished 47#injectors. I cant run on the 47'd right now

I dont think I can run the car on the 19's unless someone thinks a walbro hp255 can force six 19# injectors to supply 250-300hp (assuming I set the rate of gain VERY high and run high base pressure). .

Well, I would say you don't need the 19's to run 250-300 hp right off the bat, I would put them in there just to test to see if the injectors are the issue. You're not going to be out any money.. It's not that difficult a task to replace them anyway.

Re: Motor starts with fuel injectors not plugged in.

well 250-300 is around what I think wastegate pressure (5-6psi) will do.
I just dont want to repeat past mistakes with assuming I had more fuel to work with then reality gave me.

Ill have to give the 19#'s a try.

I don't know if the 3.0's have a similar regualtor setup, but another possibility would be the FPR leaking fuel into the intake though the vac port...

I was thinking the same thing. I bet it is. There is no way an injector could leak enough to allow a run condition... yes all of them could be leaking, but that is just improbable.

Re: Motor starts with fuel injectors not plugged in.

I did have problems with the regulator leaking when i had backed out the base rate screw to much (aka all the way out)...but I thought it had stopped. I guess I can remove the line and then play with it some more later this week.

The leaky regulator is a good idea and a definate possibility, let us know what you find.

Re: Motor starts with fuel injectors not plugged in.

I havent tested it yet but I was thinking.........#1 cylinder has its intake manifold entrance right next to the vacuum line that is probably leaking fuel.

This would probably be why cylinder #1 did not seal the first 20 miles because that plug is just fouling out.

Anyways its nice to have some more ideas about what is probably going on.
If thats the case then Im gonna remove the regulator (BEGI mr2035) and send it off to mr corky bell for a rebuild.
It always worked great before this current project :P

Someone gave me the simple idea to get a vacuum pump from autozone loan a tool and play around with that on the regulator.

Hook up a fuel pressure guage, turn on the fuel pump and apply vacuum and pressure to the reg, it should remove and add fuel pressure.

Thanks for the help so far.
I didnt even attempt to prime the fuel system.
