90 VNT with broken trans case

I just purchased a 90 VNT Daytona with the 568 5 spd. The front of the case is missing a big chunk where the front mount bolts on. The transmission shifts great. My question is what cases will interchange with the 568? I have a good 520 case laying around. I want to swap the guts into a good case. I'm hoping at least a 523 case will work if not the 520.

    Any 568 or 523 transmission.

Have you had much success with that stuff? I tried it, but all I had was a oxy/acetylene torch.....no propane. I couldnt get it to stick real well. I was trying to add metal to an intake manifold. Maybe it was too hot?

I dunno. Considering the chunk removed is at a bolt hole, I dont have much confidence in it holding. It is easier to get a new case. You should contact TurboGLH, he probably has some cases available and also does rebuilds with his father Cliff Ramsdell.

523 case would be the way to go, but why not have someone tig it nd then drill/tap a new hole?

That was my first thought as well. If done right, it should be as strong or stronger than original.

Yes, That did cross my mind at first. I'm missing a good chuck of metal in that area, so I was going to cut a piece from my 520 and get that welded in. After thinking about it some more, it would also be good to just get another case and then I can freshen it up while its all apart.
Does this sound like someone popped the clutch with the bolts being loose? Hoping this isn't a common weak spot. Iv'e never seen anything like it before. Sorry for not posting a picture, maybe when I get it pulled out I can get a shot of it.

Thanks again for all the input

Yeah, if you're planning on freshening the trans while it's apart, then a case swap would be the way to go. On the other hand, having it repaired/welded would save time and money if a rebuild isn't needed. It sounds like you're on the right track with thinking it was the result of a loose bolt. I've also seen it happen when someone tried to pull an engine and missed a bolt.

Re: 90 VNT with broken trans case

This broken boss happened to my stepfather's Lancer. He was real hard on the car as well. I had a brace mad eup at the time and it actually worked and the front motor mount stopped breaking after.

Re: 90 VNT with broken trans case

i dunno if it was specifically said.. i wouldnt bother trying to weld it on the car. it needs to come out. if replacing the case is just as easy to you at that point then go for it.
