The age old stud re-torquing debate

Before I put my shelby valve cover on should I re-torque the head studs? I have a cometic gasket and arp head studs. I have about 1800 miles since I put the head on and I have never re-torqued them. What should I torque them to and how should I do it? I plan on running 27 psi this year.

I just run the torque wrench around at the max torque I torqued them too originally. With a cometic gasket it may not do any good but it only takes 5 minutes to make sure they're still holding torque.

since head studs are not TTY, and you are soposed to retorque them after a heat cycle or 2.....i think a retorque couldn't hurt

Your not supposed to but if you want to, knock yourself out. I have never done it and haven't had a head gasket failure, even at 30+ lbs off boost.

I think the age old debate was for age old head gasket technology.

I did the last time I had the valve cover off. It cannot hurt to do it.

I just put the torque wrench on them and they were all just below 90. So I just set it to 90 and they just moved a hair.

Do you still have my torque gauge or did you give it back to me? I can't seem to find it although I have not looked very hard yet.

Re: The age old stud re-torquing debate

1st time I put in studs with an MP gasket I didn't re-torque since it was about a 50/50 split on doing it and not doing it on the old list's. Well the next morning after checking I had no leaks I went out on the freeway and got on it. The head lifted and sprayed coolant all over my airbox. Been retorquing them ever since and never had another problem again.

Re: The age old stud re-torquing debate

I had a Cometic bolted down with ARP studs on the Z, retorqued after the first heat cycle, only torqued to 80ft-lb, held to 30psi no problem till the rod let go...
