Mine was the 86 GLHS on the Boosted Mopar Video. After Watching that video I bought one. Then four days later the motor blew. And now i have a 90 Daytona VNT.

The TM that got me hooked wasn't even my car. In fact I'd never even seen it in person.
That was Gary Donovan's red Daytona. If I were to say Gary's Daytona cast the line, then it would have to be my '89 CS that set the hook. I've been out of TM's a couple times since then, but they always keep reeling me back in.

my mom bought a brand new blue/silver shelby charger in 85, man that thing was fun. she enjoyed beating her bosses built up 80ish camaro, with me in the pass seat wicked fast for an 11 year old. also her co-worker had an 85 daytona turbo, i could not get over watching the boost gauge rise as i was set back in the seat, what a feeling. so i guess it was 2 cars lol. later in life i was playing with sb chevys and camaro's like i was brought up on, till i started leaning toward putting a v-8 in my s-10...... when i saw my total in parts, labor ect., i got a little discouraged. then i found a shelby charger in the local paper for 1000$....SOLD! after it blew up (previous owner had it at 14psi w/too much timing) i found an 89 shelby tona on e-bay all modded up, the rest is history.
just cant get enough of these cars!

If I go back far enough, the Daytona Z in Hunter (and my Matchbox Daytona from the same time) was what gave me the nudge to liking them

My first "hook" was, I was walking to work and heard a car ripping 3 gears from a stop light. I turned around and see this black 4 door Omni. I think it was a GLHS. I've wanted on ever since.
Most recently I saw a garnet/silver Charger and started doing research on turbo mopars. I ended up with a stinker of an 88 Shelby Z. Junked that one. Now I have a homemade turbo van, and a 1989 Daytona Shelby.

Re: The first TM that got you hooked!

I was looking through "The Car Lounge" on www.vwvortex.com and I came across a build up about a Turbo Mini(~2002). Ever since I read through that I have been hooked. Link to said build up(The Mini is currently owned by a board member The S is Silent).

I finally got myself to a point in my life where I could afford my own car with my own money and a TM is what I went after. I found a 90 Daytona VNT and drove 7+ hrs to pick it up. That car didn't work out and I drove 7+ hrs back in the rental, but after that 10 minute test drive I was really hooked! Next thing I know I found my current car 30 minutes from where I live in beautiful shape and for a great price.

86 Plymouth Turismo 2.2 HO. Same 110hp carb engine that the GLH and Shelby Chargers got. I loved that car, it just needed more power :-) It was kind of fun to be able to wind out 1st, 2nd and 3rd and still only be doing 55mph. It was my first car. I traded it in on an 89 Daytona Shelby in 1993 and have been hooked on the turbos ever since. I just recently got my GLHS on the road, the first L-body I've owned since the Turismo and it is really a flashback for me, I love it. I wouldn't mind having another Turismo 2.2 if I could find one, they all seem to be dead at this point even though they made some 4300 or so of them in 86.

Re: The first TM that got you hooked!

My TM experience started with a 93 N/A 2.2 5-speed Sundance. I alway heard about turbo models and decided to do some research. That is how I stumbled across thedodgegarage, and Gus's site. The hunt was on for a turbo car. I then found a CLEAN 87 Shelby Z at a local car lot. TII 5-speed all stock and very nice. Bright red. It ran good, but would buck and cut out under boost. Dealership wanted to get rid of it and it came with an 88 TII Shelby Z with 235K miles on it that ran like crap. Bought the pair for a song, fixed the vacuum lines on the 87 and sold it for more than what I paid for the pair. Did a quick inspection on the 88 and found the ground missing on the back of the intake. That car ripped for having 235K on it even with a slipping clutch. Sold that one too. Money talks. In hind sight, I should have kept one of them. I made up for it by turbo charging a 3cyl Geo Metro (don't laugh it was a lot of fun!). But started a family, and needed something bigger. My 97 Escort isn't cutting it for me. I need boost. Now I am looking for a 4-door TM.

Mine was a combination of two cars - bought and Omni 024 some time ago with an auto/1.6L - the car was fun even though powerless. Ten years ago, a buddy from work bought an '86 GLH and let me drive it. What got me was the same interior (I was already used to it) with power

I bought my SL 2 months later, and just recently picked up an L-body ('85 GLH) of my very own

I saw when I was a very small kid (2 years old) a commercial or something for the LeBaron Turbo GTC coupe in late 88. Red car, with the black lace rims, and the gray leather interior... I wanted one since then. 18 years after that and many many different cars, I finally got the one I wanted since it was brand new.

Re: The first TM that got you hooked!

I've been an old school Mopar guy since back in the early '80's. But I'd always liked the TD's, I just wanted to wait for sale prices to come down to a point where I could experiment with them and not break the bank if it got blown up.

So I came across Gary D's website in '99 or so, and read through it completely, like three times. So...knowing what performance mods could be made I finally had the itch to go ahead and buy a TD, but which one????

I happened to come across a bone stock '87 CSX #726 locally that had been a Southern car it's whole life. Aside from faded paint this thing was in great shape. I proceeded to unplug the wastegate and drove it that way! Pulled like a big block V8, at that point the TD hook was set.

Still have the CSX, although it needs some motor and electrical work now. I also bought into the TIII affliction with an IROC R/T and Spirit R/T!

I was driving an 1989 Daytona ES non turbo with an automatic. While driving one day I noticed a red Daytona setting in a yard with a for sale sign on it.
My daughter was looking for a car at this time, so I took her to see it. As I walked around the car I noticed it had a 5 speed and Shelby Z decals above the door handles. I looked at my daughter and said, Tonya you don't want this car. She said why not dad and I said because I do! This was in 2000. The car has been named "2nd Childhood". This car gets the blame for my addiction. This car will never be sold...it makes me a kid again!

Re: The first TM that got you hooked!

Well, believe it or not it wasn't a TD that made me want one. When I was 17 I was with a buddy in an 89 Z-28(5.7 TPI) and we raced against a GN. The GN blew our doors off. I had no idea what the hell it was. I stopped and asked the guy what he had, who was in his 50's by the way. He said it was a turbo V6. I was like "huh"? WTF, a V6 kicked the a$$ of my buddies hopped up Z? No way... He said it had a "turbo" so I said hmmm... then my bro got an 86 turbo Z. it was bonestock auto and "so-so" fast at best. Then years later I got my GN for me. So, keeping in the spirit of "turbo's" I wanted a DD that was good on gas, fairly quick, and cheap. Enter, (drum-roll)the TD .... an 88 Pacifica.. So, here's my GN compromise.

The car that got me hooked was my first car a 1986 Plymouth Turismo Duster 2.2 carb/auto. I was looking for things to do to the carb cars and started reading about the turbo cars. My first turbo car was an 87 Lebaron coupe I bought about a year later.

The one that got me hooked was an IMSA GTU Daytona with a 2.0 (destroked 2.2) This was the car where the Super 60 package came out of.

    Yes, it was FWD!

Re: The first TM that got you hooked!

My first experience with a TD was back when I was probably 7 or 8 years old. My uncle owns a used car dealership up north and he had come back down my way to an auction and bought a couple of cars. Since he wasn't able to take them all back to his dealership on his own, my dad volunteered to help him out. I can distinctly remember it being a blue Daytona with grey ground effects and a sunroof! I thought it was the coolest car in the world at the time haha.

Now moving on to when I was 13, I was checking out the pictures in one of my dad's Chrysler Chronicle books. I happened to come across a picture of an '86 black/silver Shelby Charger. I immediately fell in love with the Shelby Chargers and by 14 I had bought my first junker SC

But what really got me into messing around with my TD's are the stories and information shared with me from my good friend Dennis. Dennis is a local guy and is known by most as "Turbo Denny". When I first got my license and was driving my '90 Daytona Shelby, my dad and some of the guys from Frank's (Local Chrysler garage where I'm friends w/all the guys there) told me I should take a cruise to see Denny and show him the car. Well I finally did get out there and he was just a wealth of information and had tons of great stories about his old Spirit R/T, his old T2 Acclaim, his Shelby Lancer #79 (still had it at the time), and his old Omni GLH-T.

To make a long story short, he told me plenty of stories and showed me all of the photos from the restoration of his GLH-T and that was enough to keep me hooked for life!

Here is a picture of Denny's old GLH-T from when he had it about 7-8 years ago.

I know the guy who owns this exact car right now. Unfortunately it has served a rough life since Denny sold it all them years ago. It has been stripped of it's Super 60 parts and has just been sitting for the past several years and most recently the front end is jacked up on blocks I am going to make a great effort to try and buy it this coming summer in hopes to restore it back to its former glory. After restoring it, I can't think of anything more fitting than driving it to show Denny and tossing him the keys and letting him take it for a spin
