Can you make a overhead light stay on and dim?

Just a question. I know a lot of the new cars have a feature where the dome light stays on for a few seconds after you close the door. It seems like it must be simple... maybe a capacitor that holds a charge and slowly discharges? Is there a way to retrofit one of our cars to do this?
