Thread: Copper O-ring HG as head shim

Copper O-ring HG as head shim

The head on my CSX requires the use of a Fel-Pro "HeadSaver" head shim because it was shaved about .010" (a reman). I was wondering if I could use one of the thicker copper head gaskets meant for o-ringed block instead to drop the compression a bit.

    Thoughts?

Keep the compression! remember Alex's Lancer motor? I think that one was cut a lot further than that.

Yeah, but it was a G-head with deep dish pistons, IIRC.

with all due respect...IMHO... you could ...but copper is fairly high maintenence,
boost level/head surface finish/ torque...etc etc is critical .(not meaning to state the obvious, )
I would opt for a thicker MLS gasket.
as usual opinion submited with repspects to all...

Then why does the copper shim on my block hold up just fine uder 25psi and copious amounts spark knock? I coat the block with a light layer of shellac, but not the top of the shim.

Re: Copper O-ring HG as head shim

I've had pretty good luck with the shims over the years in a few different motors. I think they are made by SCE sold thru Summit. IIRC they have .020,.032,.060 and .070.

I use a little Hylomar blue goo between the shim and the block and GasKaCinch between the head gasket and the shim, then a little copper Permatex spray between the head and the gasket. I like the lower compression with the lousy CA 91 octane pi$$water gas we have. I'd rather lower the CR than pull back the timing when running 18PSI and up.

Re: Copper O-ring HG as head shim

it was just my personal opinion gents, as stated,
not trying to offend anyone!!!!! I am just not a fan
of 6 contact surfaces as compared with 4, of course I did not use shellac
or copper coat, or Hylomar blue goo

and Mr Knize....I cant answer your question, perhaps I will go back to
your website and review your treieste on F=AxP in head gasket sealing.

    respects..........

On The 2.5 In My Rampage I Wanted To Lower The Compression A Little So I Used The .020 Headshim With The Mopar Gasket Sealant For The Neon Head Gaskets On Both Sides Of The Shim And Both Sides Of The Mp Gasket. So Far So Good Also Used Arp Head Studs.
