    TIII engine rebuild questions (pics)

    Im going through my DD R/T because of a blown head gasket and no more clutch. As im tearing it apart im not liking what im seeing.

    yup thats oil in the I/C piping
    so i continue on:
    i get it out and start looking it over and i find that the thermostat housing is cracked where the temp sensor screws in. somone over tightened it putting it in from what i can tell. I have taken it out yet so im not sure how tight it is.

    I start pulling it apart and find just about every pully on the front of the engine is noisy!
    I get to pulling the valve cover only to find that i need 2 lifters. I pull the rocker shaft out only to find that the both cams have almost worn down in spots;

    Im also not too sure about the cam main journals: there is one on the exhaust side that is pretty scored up.
    So I pull the head to find that its cracked between #2 spark plug and a exhaust valve. On the 8-Valve heads i wouldnt worry but what about the 16V? does it matter?

    By this time im getting pretty discouraged and dont want to continue but i do anyway. I spin the engine over on the stand and pull off the pan only to find this;

    see anything missing?
    then i look at the oil pick up and;

    it looks like somone just punched a hole in it? is this a common mod?

    Anyway i stopped here for now. My intent was to pull the engine clean everything get the head psi checked and plained. clean the block paint it and put it all back together with the crap load of parts i have sitting in my room. I just wanted to put a solid stock engine together. but now it looks like im going to have to get cams. Which i have mixed feelings about. My only mods were going to be a FMIC, intake, Exhaust, and cal. i wanted to keep it simple and its turning out to be more than i expected. (go figure)

    anyway thats my rant and now i feel a little better.

    Ok, get that head pressure tested, mine was cracked around that area and needed some serious welding to fix it. Luckily, I have connections,

    Your going to need some reground cams or some good used ones, either LWP or get ahold of a local cam grinder if you have one.

    Check over the rollers on the bad lobes very carefully, I bet you'll need some new/used rockers also.

    The hole in the oil pump pickup looks like its rubbed thru, check the bottom of the pan and I bet you see another mark where they were touching.

    Just get a stock replacement oil pump-any brand is fine, no HP or HV pump is needed.

    Other than that, clean her up, maybe just rings and off you go.

    I have two 16v cars... just no turbo.

    One saturn and one protege...

    RD 2.2 16v scares me. Knowing that it is almost next to impossible to find parts and if there is parts, the price is super expensive. If I ever get a TIII cars, I'll resale it for parts.

    Speaking of which, do you have the turbine housing picture yet?

    Check the intermediate shaft gear and the i-shaft bearings. That oil pump looks to be a bit newer than the rest of the engine... did you replace it or did it fail sometime in the past? I'd hate to see your freshened engine suffer the same fate as mine.

    Re: TIII engine rebuild questions (pics)

    well i got back to it tonite and found more damage. heres it is;

    with the bearing being like that i expected to find some major damage on the mains and rods but to my surprise they looked great;

    anyway the pistons and everything else look ok so well see what the machine shop says in a few days about the head. Has anyone used cams from FWD or Lonewolf? I also need 3 rocker arms and lifters.

    The oil pump looks newer but its a mopar unit so im not sure. and the oil pick up was rubbing on the pan after i sprayed it off i found the rub mark. (the pan was all smashed in).

    comments and suggestions are welcome

    Looks familiar. Your outer bearing looks like my inner shaft bearing did. It really is too bad the oiling hole for that bearing is where it is. High loads from the belt tension and marginal oiling where it's needed most will do that over time.

    At least the main bearing looks acceptable; it's not trashed. Crank may need turned but it's hard to tell for definite damage from the pics. Pics just just don't work well with my Starrett.

    I'm almost done making sure my newly fabbed tool will work to replace those shaft bearings; if it works and you want/need to borrow it just LMK and we can work something out.

    Re: TIII engine rebuild questions (pics)

    thanks for the offer but while the blocks at the machine shop ill just let them take care of it, that way if the f-it up the can buy new bearings. the mains look great. i cant believe how the bearing looked. ive never seen that before. it took chunks out of it. the bearing surface that remains looks ok too? its like the bearing just broke? idk the block will to the machine shop next week. I may need to borrow the t-belt gauge again when i get everything back tho . maybe you could come up and tell me what im doing wrong when i put it together. a fri or sat night with some beers?

    You need to get the proper puller or make one. A common mistake is to use a too large center screw and this just holds the gear on, you must space it out or have it smaller than the center as the gear is shouldered.

    Get a crank pulley, weld a nut in the middle, find a matching bolt to that nut and you got yourself a new puller.

    What you do is loose the center bolt of the crank sprocket a little, then you attach the puller on it by using those 5 little bolts *put a wrench on the center bolt so it can't turn. Once the pulley is on, you screw the center bolt in to force the puller to pull on the crank sprocket. You'll have to reposition the puller once the sprocket came up to where the center bolt is.

    Works everytime for me.

    I bought an el-cheapo Harbor Freight puller and drilled holes in it to match. It has worked fine for years and many uses.

    Re: TIII engine rebuild questions (pics)

    i have the correct puller. i went and bought the correct one when i started with these engines. the S.O.B. is just plain stuck. i had the same problem with the TII i just got done with. i ended up destroying the crank pully getting it off and id like to avoid that this time.(pulley ended up shattering where the little holes are) so i guess ill just keep spraying it and hope for the best.
    thanks

    Heat it with a torch, then rap it with a ball-peen hammer. Remember to use some anti-seize when re-installing.
