    5-Speed to a A413 in an Omni

My friend has a 1986 Omni GLH-T with the factory 5-speed. A few months back the transmission made a noise and now it only has a couple of gears.
He was running 20 p.s.i. at the time. He has not torn it down yet and is thinking about switching over to the A413 auto. He has one of these from another car.

He wants to know what would be involved in making the switch. Will the current axels work, and what kind of shifter would be required. Does the A413 use one or two cables, and would an aftermarket shifter work as he owns a speed shop and has access to them.

If the A413 is a bad idea what is the best 5-speed to use? I myself use both the A555 and A568 in my cars but I'm not sure what to recommend for the Omni.

Any info you have will be appreciated as I want to see him get the Omni back on the road so he can go with us on the Hot Rod Power Tour this year.

    Thanks,

The only thing that confuses me is the TC and Flexplate combo if using a 87 and newer trans, other that that, it uses 2 cables, one for the shifter and one for the kickdown so he either runs a MVB and he won't need it or his current T/B might be and have the necessary place or he'll have to install a t/b with one.

Axles, he needs to use auto axles so the long and short one, 87 and up. 5speed axles never got the large spline but of course if he uses an 86 or older trans, he can reuse his axles.

You can put a shifter on the floor if you want, or even on the roof,

Did he have the moly plate installed on his 525?

With only one cable, looks like an aftermarket shifter should work just fine.

    No moly plate installed

Re: 5-Speed to a A413 in an Omni

I ran an auto in my OMNI for a while. I was running a A-555 before that, so it was a real easy swap.

Go to the junkyard and find a Omni/Horizon auto. Should be an easy find....look for curb feelers or other old people markings. Grab the shifter and cable and floor grommet and transmission top bracketry and drivers side motor/transmission mount bracket (it's L-body specific).

Yes, 5spds did get big axles..just not the 525 transmission. You can run equal length with an auto if you get a intermediate drive shaft from a car that had bigger axles (like a Shelby Z for example). Or you can run un-equal length. Up to you. You can even run the stock right side axle by making a hybrid intermediate axle.

I just removed my clutch pedal assy from the rest of the pedals. Easy. Or you can grab the big brake pedal for the auto if you want.

Re: 5-Speed to a A413 in an Omni

I switched mine a few years back.
Easiest thing to do is find an late, 88 and up, auto Omni in a junkyard.
Grab the drivers side trans mount, shifter/cable, flexplate, converter and axels.
You'll have to get a kickdown linkage setup from an auto Daytona, or use a manual valve body.

Don't use an NA 413, make sure it came from a turbo car.

Years 86 1/2 and down have a 3 bolt converter, and the flexplate bolts to the flywheel with 6 bolts.
They also have small spline axels

86 1/2 and up use a 4 bolt converter and the flexplate bolts to the crank using 8 bolts. They use large spline axels.
Your Omni should use this setup. Depending on when it was made in 86.

I bought a transmission from a guy that uses a late flexplate/ converter
but early axels.(I could reuse the stock axels from the 525) It has the small spline differental.

Thanks for the info guys....I will pass it on

BTW my friend already has the tranny......from a turbo model.

I guess he will have to find the drivers side mount

Went auto a few years ago and exploded the diff in it the 2nd time I had it at the track. Went back to manual and that's where I plan on staying for a while. I like running 10's with a 5 spd using 4 gears!

Well, to me I own'd a performance automatic A-413 with double clutch packs in my 88 Chrysler lebaron Coupe but I still didn't like the 3spd especially on the high way. So, I converted to a Shelby A-555 tranny, clutch and all and stayed that way ever since. On the high way I average 35 mpg and a step in the gas I have plenty off power and love every min of it specially putting people in the dust.
But its all up to you what are you planning on doing I.E.: drag, cursing, street/strip setup

This is why I switched out my transfer gear to a .91
I don't drive my car on the street, but it brought
down the RPM at the big end.
As far as being sluggish starting out, I just cranked up the boost.

I honestly didn't notice any difference around town when I put the .91's in but my highway rpm dropped nicely.

For you guys running the .91 gear...
what RPM are you turning at around 75 mph?
what RPM are you turning at the end of the 1/4?

I believe on the highway, around 3300 rpm, old gears, close to 4000 rpm.

Track, no idea but I did run 22 inch slicks.
