    a555 or a523??

I am trying to decide on whether going with a a555 or a523 in my daytona. It will be running a s60 turbo at 15ish psi. I guess I am wondering about your experiences with both, will the car be a bit faster with the gearing of the a555?

I do ALOT of highway driving so thats why I am kinda leaning towards the a523, but the a555 is supposed to be a lot stronger.

    thanks

    Re: a555 or a523??

I have a 555/Quaife in one car and a 523/OBX in another. Assuming the two LSD's act the same and taking them out of the equasion, the 523 is a much nice trans to live with as far as shift quality, gear noise, and highway rpms. There is one other thing that matters to me but probably no one else I hate the 555/520 reverse lift ring and the shift knob in general. The Momo style knob is so much more appealing to hold onto. It makes my hand happy Not like in a Borat 'hand party' sort of way either

    Re: a555 or a523??

I yanked the 555 out of my daytona and dropped in a 523. I'll NEVER go back. The shifts are snick snick fast even with a stock shifter. I don't have a posi in mine but you wouldn't know it. It'll burn both tires off as long as you can keep them spinning. I love the 523. 32MPG from Spokane Wa to SoCal and back last oct on a 2.5 with +40's. Averaged 72.5MPH the whole way. Only stopping for gas. Yes I drove straight through Just get booger bushings or the like as the stockers are junk. Mine were tight when I put the tranny in but they're starting to get some play in them. I need to order the bushings.

with my tona and the 523 and the 3.5 final.....
at 100 km/h your doing around 2000 rpms
    at 120 km/s your around 2600 rpm

i was able to scam out 800 kms per tank* doing pure highway driving..... On long trips you'll need to pullover more for washroom/food breaks then for gas.

(*with mistu turbo>>>had full tq @2000 so i just had to look at the throttle to accelerate...spend most of my time doing 11Okm/h)

thanks guys I am pretty much leaning towards a a523 now, I just have to see if the shifter will fit fine in a 1st gen center console.

another nice thing about the 523/568 is they don't require a chrome moly plate to stop ring gear deflection!

Another one for the 523. They're just a lot smoother than the older trannys.

Thanks guys, now I'll have to find an 86 boot (my car was an auto), or possibly an 89 boot as its a bit more "rounded"

    Re: a555 or a523??

Do any of you guys have or thought of installing a b&m or fidanza short shifter on your a523/568? I would think that would improve shifting further even if it takes a little more effort. The reason I'm going to this tranny with my T2 swap is I have driven my brother's 5.0 Mustang with a short shifter and it is amazingly tight; just clicks into gears. I love it. I don't like the a525 at all. It's mushy and imprecise. I always find it odd when people praise that tranny and they love how it shifts.

I have an A523 in my wagon, and I also never want to go back to the old style transaxles. I have booger bushings in my cables and the shifts are amazing. It goes right into gear, no problem at all.

    Re: a555 or a523??

I've got a 555 in my GLHS and I really don't like it. 1st and 2nd (and 3rd if its less than 40 degrees out) are worthless, along with 3200 rpm highway rpm, and shifting is not very smooth. Maybe with a 523 you could at least use 2nd gear.
