Wanted: Info on Replacement Headlight Housings (Not Sealed Beam)

As the title implies. I think a few of us have been interested in these and it's hard to know what to look for and what to look out for on E-Bay and anywhere else. Might be a small subsection worth adding to the knowledge centre if we can come up with some good info.

I went with the Rally Lights setup. The beam pattern is great, so much better then stock. Plus I have the relay setup as well. So the headlights get full power.

    SHH! Hold your horses
    Ok maybe not literally...

I figure that if my omni already has one broken lens from a rock and they're both pretty weak, might as well go with the replaceable bulb option.

Now...as to which bulb I choose to put in there, well, that all remains to be seen

The PS3 chick is so hot. I know Graeme liked that one.

These housings all list sizes in inches, and only one dimension. The ones in the picture don't look as square as my omni lights. Have the measurements?

Now, if your looking for real headlights, that shine on the road and not in peoples faces...

You want to look for replacement headlights that have a European code stamped into the lens. It's a letter 'E' and a number, that refers to the Country that the lamps are designed for.

note the E2 in this one

I found Hella lamps in a couple speed shops. They had to order them in, and were $90cad for the pair. (with bulbs)

The main key, is the H4 bulb. If you look at them, there is a little shade built into the bulb itself, to shield the lowbeam filament. This makes the cutoff to keep light on the road only.

I have European spec lamps for my Neon as well, along with Silverstar H4 bulbs. (had to get those lamps straight from Germany)

I got e codes in my 88 xj jeep they work better than my diamond cut h4 in my charger. When I mean better is because you can see better in the rain.

I wish they made reflector type lights for the van, when running composites.

Re: Wanted: Info on Replacement Headlight Housings (Not Sealed Beam)

For the guys using the e code or other low glare housings, how are they for seeing off the sides of the road? I do a fair bit of driving on 2 lane country roads with woods on either side where deer are a problem. I like the idea of putting more light on the road and less in other drivers faces, but not at the expense of losing visibility to the sides.

Kinda hard for me to remember that long ago, but I think the light to the sides is improved as well. It's certainly not worse than regular sealed beams.

Tony, sounds like some quality fog lights are in order for you. Also you can use a relay to jump power from your high beams over to your low beam wire so when you switch on high beams the lows stay on.

Re: Wanted: Info on Replacement Headlight Housings (Not Sealed Beam)

Thanks guys. I may give the e codes a shot and a good set of fog lights. I've heard that wiring for both beams on high will cause the bulb to fail really quickly due to overheating or some such. Any truth to that?
    Thanks again,

That I dont know. But seems possible cause of heat. If you think about it you really dont have your high beams on that long though.
