they have them at many or all auto parts stores. IMO the plate ones(like my B&M) are more durable(to stones and such) but cost more.
$30-50 is price range, some more or less depending.

They say it can't be too big but I don't believe that unless it has a built in thermostat to control the temp. I would go for a 12-15000 lb unit, as in GVW. Theres some new ones out that are billet aluminum, I am will be putting one of those on as I have run out of space and my cooler sticks down below the bumper.

    Re: External Tranny Coolers

Well, I bought a MAXI-COOL XL cooler and hung it in front of the A/C condenser with a bracket. The box says it will reduce 13,500 BTU.
They wanted $54 for it, but I found a similar one at another store for
$39, so they beat the price and gave it to me for $37. (Shucks)

Next question: Which one of the outlets for the fluid on the tranny is the discharge? The idea of course is to fill the cooler from the bottom before it returns to the trans.

I bought one from Mr. P-body, a Permacool trans cooler, and it works great. Was only like $25.

I'll look tomorrow and see which one is which. Also, pick up an inline filter that has a magnet. Saved my trans numerous times. I put it before the tranny cooler.

    Re: External Tranny Coolers

I found a factory cooler on a Caravan, year unknown, in the local yard that had no signs of leaks or damage. It still has the mounting brackets from the Caravan. I was thinking I could fab-it to my 84 T-1 Lebaron and help that older automatic tranny all I can. I also would like to know how to hook it up (in front of the condenser) for the best results. Thanks.

Lower tube is the outlet (this is fluid from converter). Upper tube is the inlet (fluid goes to lubrication).

    Re: External Tranny Coolers

I add external coolers to all our family autos, what's easy & cheap is using 2 of the factory Mopar coolers in series.

    The 84 - 86 coolers are 4 row, about 4" x 24", easy junkyard find.

Or, many other cars use external coolers, just shop around at the yard...

    Re: External Tranny Coolers

Does the same hose routing( i.e. inlets and outlets) pertain to engine oil coolers? Such as from the sandwich adapter to the bottom nipple and back to the block on the top nipple or does it matter for an engine oil cooler?

I don't know how much it matters or how I have mine hooked up, but I know it gets cooled off quickly.

    Re: External Tranny Coolers

Where I work, at a chemical plant, all of the plate & frame type coolers are
filled from the bottom up. This increases the efficiency. If the liquid 'falls through' the cooler by gravity, it spends less time in the cooler, and also can become aerated (?spelling) ie. foam/bubble. So, that is the reason I said to fill from the bottom up.

Thanks for the info on how the trans fluid flows!
