    Rear Disc Brake Interchange?

So the TC Masi had the brake light come on Friday night on the way home from work. Saturday morning there's a huge puddle of brake fluid under the passenger rear caliper I pulled the wheel to check it out and it's just oozing past the piston seal. The TC's have that non internal shoe solid rear disc with a parking brake cable. Of course all the parts places have it for 'special order 3-7 days' anywhere from $81-$127. So I'm hitting a yard between appointments tomorrow... My question is, do all the solid disc non internal shoe brakes/calipers interchange? I think they do but just looking for anyone who has replaced them on an 87-88 Daytona or similar.

I think the ones with the brake cable in the caliper and no parking brake drum are the same as the 5 lug neons but im not 100% sure on that.

It all depends on whether the parking brake is in the caliper or in the rotor... vented rotors are with the brake caliper parking brake, and the non-vented(solid) rotors are with the parking brake shoes... 5 lug of course...

89 TC has the same rear brakes as 87/88 Daytona Shelby.

Why not just rebuild the caliper you have? It's just couple of seals. It's really easy to do.

I checked a couple Neons, similar but different...

I was definately looking for 87-88 Daytonas but none were to be found Two J yards yesterday and must have been a million Lebarons and two million Shadows but the Lebarons have the internal shoe and even the ES Shadows I found were rear drums, spoilers and body kits but no go fast or stop fast parts. I guess ES was an appearence only package a lot of the time

I,ve never rebuilt a caliper but I know for sure my cheesy little three stone hone is missing one stone, so in addition to that where do I get the rebuild kit for the caliper. Local Dodge dealership parts dept is a whole knucklehead crew these days, anything pre-Daimler they don't even want to look up All the cool old staff was phased out when the new ownership took over, bastids!

Assuming your hardware for the calipers are in good condition, all you do to rebuild is to clean the parts, change the piston seal, and change the dust boot. That's it, it's really simple.

I bought my stuff from Autozone.

Not quite. All 11" vented rears use the internal drum parking brake. '87-'88 10" non-vented rears used the caliper. '89+ 10" non-vented used the same internal drum setup that the 11" used.

Easiest way to tell which kind of parking brake is look at the cable. If the cable goes into the back plate, it has the internal drum (and you can tell just looking at the rotor). If the cable goes to the caliper....well yeah.

Would love to but I'd also like to keep the rear ABS, the tone wheel set up looks like a no-interchange deal. I've already upgraded the fronts to RT spec and it was a PIA to fab up an ABS sensor holder bracket thingy then weld it onto the new carrier set up This is *not* my track car...

    Thanks for all the input

Just get the rear 11" vented brakes from an ABS car.(hard to find) I get the caliper kits from NAPA or Carquest. Your buddy has a '87 Shelby Lancer you could get calipers from toooooooo.

Wait, I have a set of SL brakes in the attic, are you saying they will adapt to the 11.25 RT brakes somehow? I know, I'll bring a bix boxfull of brake parts on Thursday night and the club can install them with me. It would be a bonding task right?

The SL rears are the solid rotors. I meant you can use the SL calipers on the TC. The RT anti-lock setup will fit also. (11" vented) Or a '91+ V-6 Lebaron GTC with the big brakes and anti-lock.....

I'll drag out that box from the attic and check it out, I sure thought I remebered the SL brakes had internal drum parking shoes, maybe that was 87CSX. I remember have a set that had "Shelby" stamped right on them with yellow ink.

See you at Applebee's, rain is supposed to be gone by this am, think I'll drag out the GLHS, maybe put the DR's on there too

    Re: Rear Disc Brake Interchange?

Yeah, the '87 SL uses a solid 10" rotor but has the internal parking brake drum. Very similar to the '89+ production stuff, except a few small things like the brake line and caliper bolts are different.

The '87 CSX and SL are basically pre-production versions of the '89+ rear brakes.

I wasn't sure..... I thought all the pre '89 cars had the non drum setup.
