    RMVB with stock guts?

Can I use a RMVB on a completely stock 413?? I think it will actually help ensure the longevity of the tranny as the clutches aren't slipping together between shifts with the added line pressure.

    Just want a firm opinion.

Sure you can, I am sure it will help the life but as far as shifting, it could be a bit sloppier due to the excessive clearances the factory likes.

    Re: RMVB with stock guts?

why bother when taking the trans out and making the changed you want isnt much harder?

413s are super simple to build, might as well get an extra one and start learning. i think i have 5 of them, hehe. i just took 3 to the shop to practice on, hoping to build one of them for my aries next week. its not as scary as you think it will be, but you need a good work area.

if you do just the rmvb, try and get an idea of how to get the pressure right the first time.. i have no idea how, but you dont want to have to drop the pan 5 times.

You don't need to remove the trans to put a RVMB in, and he's not removing the engine or trans at this time.

    Re: RMVB with stock guts?

are rmvb street legal though? Or is that a track only type deal? or is a "hush hush" deal? We go through checks here in oregon and I would love to do a rmvb when I get it all running again, but I am afraid that it would be caught and I'd be in a world of hurt. Any thoughts?

I think they are legal. You shift a manual, why you wouldn't be allowed to shift an auto is beyond me. Wouldn't surprise me though. . . . .

I like how Simon knows what's always going on with mine.

    Re: RMVB with stock guts?

Never heard of a RMVB being illegal. I do state checks at my shop and theres nothing in my regs regarding a manual shifting auto or anything of that matter.

Now I will fail a car that won't shift out of first or misses gears or the engine only runs on some of cylinders, thats just safety.

I know what he was asking about, believe me, i've had 413 valve bodies in and out many times screwing with stuck governors. What im saying is to not be afraid of the the transmission and do more work than you have to because you are afraid to do it all at once. If what he really wants is an RMVB -AND- upgraded internals, then just do it! Thats all im saying. It would be a good idea imo to buy a core and then build that how you want, and put the RMVB in that and swap it in when you have time.

However, if the durability issue is not so much being afraid of overpowering it, then my advice would be to just add a cooler, do a flush, add a drain plug, and change the fluid as often as you're willing to, basically. Transmission durability has more to do with maintenance and driving style than power if you're not going to go wild with the engine.

Dempsey ran his totally stock transmission with a RPMVB for 2 years in his van running mid 13's with no problems

I just added the Permacool trans cooler and I'm bolting the tranny back in today hopefuly. I'll have to check out that drain plug thread, as that would be real nice.

Yep, and the reusable pan gasket, there both fluid and time savers.

    Re: RMVB with stock guts?

Simon what was the gasket called? A quartz gasket? I remember you saying something like that to me on the phone a few months ago. I don't have the money for one of those right now, need to focus on other things.

I almost got it in, this is the first time installing a trans by myself so I'm having trouble. Doesn't help that I don't have a lift, it would be a sinch then. I'm using a tranny jack now. What a pain it is to get that pass. diff. nose to clear the flywheel. Just trying to get the engine and trans to meet parallel without lifting the van through the ceiling.

    Re: RMVB with stock guts?

The pan gasket is in the FAQ's, its just a steel with a rubber bead.

Becareful you don't knock the TC out when your doing it. Make sure the TC will still turn after you've tighenend the trans down.

if you have an engine hoist, i find it to be easier to lift it from the top with straps. Be sure and check the converter when you tighten the bellhousing like Simon said, you dont want to break your pump gears and have to pull it all apart, or put it together and have the flexplate crack after 5 minutes.

    Re: RMVB with stock guts?

Good tips guys. I wish I would've read those before. No problem though as everything went fairly smoothly installing it. Had some trouble with the valve body, but I just went for a drive and it's okay... for a stock trans that is. I swear it takes 5 minutes between shifts. I added 6 quarts of Type-F along with an empty TC, that should've been enough.
