If it is an oil filled canister type coil than it does need a ballast resister, the canister must be mounted very close to vertical also according to msd tech

Do you have the resister block for the msd coil ? other than that try gapping the plugs down as well as making sure there is no oil on the spark plug boots, the old ignition system is very weak,...

Wow compression is quite a bit lower on the 2.4 over the hybrid ? Or is that from the camshafts mainly ? my hybrid is getting about 185 psi with 2.5 pistons and 2.4 stock cams.
