if the gauge sweeps back and forth at idle and goes solid under WOT then it should be hooked up rite, otherwise there may be a issue. whats your setup? have you checked the plugs?
on the 4 wire i believe its the black wire, at least it was on my 89 mini but someone one else im sure will chime in and confirm that
