    Re: A568 shaft forces

The very first one I tacked on cracked the tacks and walked off a bit and rotated when I caught it. They were small tacks cuz I wanted to keep as much heat out of it as I could. I pressed it back...

    Re: A568 shaft forces

    Great info as always! :thumb:
  3. Re: lengel's TIII Omni GLH progress (used to be spirit r/t)

I think lengel's design incorporates the input shaft retainer directly into the man plat so the backup plate is only needed on the intermediate shaft. I think this is where the discussion is to have...
  4. Re: lengel's TIII Omni GLH progress (used to be spirit r/t)

I agree it would be good to look at Al options too. beyond mass and strength steel still might have the advantage for flexibility / crack resistance

    Re: A568 shaft forces

    Nice work DJ!

I think tapered rollers on the int-shaft could would help but would be concerned about:
-the mods required to the front bell housing
-do we need to set pinion gear lash now?...

    Re: A568 shaft forces

Yeah that's kinda what I was saying with my last post...

I think the intermediate shaft floats so you don't have to set gearlash, it just kind of adjusts itself.

BTW... there is no doubt in...

    Re: A568 shaft forces

OK... after talking it over with lengel last night, sleeping on it and seeing all this great info and comments, how about this theory...

-The engine turns clockwise turning the input shaft...

    Re: 568 question.

Hmmm... like some of the cast diff covers for RWD they have bolts that press on the bearing caps to hold them together, if the cover was strong enough it could be used like this

    Re: 568 question.

Tension rods to tie/pull/preload the end bearing plate to the case could work if you have a straight shot through the gears in at least 2 or better 3 places around the bearing hole. hard part would...
  13. Re: lengel's TIII Omni GLH progress (used to be spirit r/t)

Axial force is from the helical gears so full straight cut gears solves most of the issues even would work with stock bearings. At that point the only axial load is from shift fork and you'll break...
  14. Re: lengel's TIII Omni GLH progress (used to be spirit r/t)

I would go steel 4140 or 4340 if possible, or even 1050. Steel works more like a spring than aluminum so even if it does flex, there are more cycles before fatigue

With that said, the OE part is...
  15. Re: lengel's TIII Omni GLH progress (used to be spirit r/t)

True story. I swapped bearing plates on my last trans a couple times, once without setting input shaft preload

Making the whole bearing plate out of 4140 will do most of the work. ...
  16. Re: lengel's TIII Omni GLH progress (used to be spirit r/t)

Cool... Want to make more? ;) They crack from the axial force of the shaft into the plate putting it in bending. They crack from the bearing hole to the bolt holes shortest path then the bolts get...

  18. Re: lengel's TIII Omni GLH progress (used to be spirit r/t)

Making that aluminum plate out of CM? I've seriously cracked 3 of them in the last A568 (the one that split in half) :(

  21. Re: Brake Fluid in the PS Resivior, How Screwed Am I?

That is assuming he can get to the return line in the "tighter than an l-body" engine compartment. Then you for sure have to flush out the pump too
  22. Re: Brake Fluid in the PS Resivior, How Screwed Am I?

^^^ +1 If its in the reservoir and has not been run yet, I would suck it out with a siphon, turkey baster, whatever you can fit in there. Then maybe fill it with PS fluid and suck that out to sort...
  23. Re: Tool to remove intermediate bearing in case

Nice work as usual Lengel! Have you made a tool to pull the worn inner races off the end of the I-shaft? I've been cutting slots and using a 3-jaw puller and its not that easy and obviously...
