If it comes apart that hard the splines will probably be damaged by the rust and the assembly should be tossed anyway.

From my experience if you just keep the shaft and the bracket hat connects it to the engine together they all end up the same length. If you mix and match the shafts with the brackets then things...

The splines in the intermediate shaft strip because they get water inside of the intermediate shaft and it rusts out... It isn't a power thing necessarily. I stripped one out on my old TI car.
