    I agree, 7075 is a good choice, and since the part is restricted in its dimensions so as to fit in the same place, a stronger, yet lighter material is a great choice.

    7050 Al has the same basic strength as mild steel, which is why it's use in proper AN fittings and as the proper material for AR upper and lower receivers.

    I don't know if re-treating would throw off dimensions or not?... I'm also curious as to whether or not "cryo-treatment" might do the trick while not altering the toleances... would either benefit...

    That's encouraging, it has been my experience that tolerance "stack-up" and sloppy fitment tends to make stuff break that otherwise could survive.

    On the braces, I'm guessing there wasn't any...
