Re: Difficult Ignition Cutout Problem
Everything is back in the car and it looks really nice. I put the original harness back in and made another HEP with the deutsch connectors from a brand new hep. I cleaned some grounds, and generally attempted to make everything as neat as possible. I made it one block before the car cut out again.
Are there any black friday deals on oscilloscopes out there?
Re: Difficult Ignition Cutout Problem
anything you havent changed?
Brian
Re: Difficult Ignition Cutout Problem
The battery terminals are about it. With all of the various problems such as the fluctuating voltage, I think I had many gremlins and I'm getting down to just one. I need to decide which 4 channel oscilloscopes to buy so I can use my nice breakout board.
Re: Difficult Ignition Cutout Problem
sorry to be a bit obtuse, but what does it do exactly?
Thanks,
Brian

It's the board I posted pics of a while back. I can look at any of the lm inputs or outputs and ,ost of the pertinent ones are already setup for a bnc connector.
Re: Difficult Ignition Cutout Problem
no not that scope board... i remember that.
what does the car do exactly when it cuts out. just dont want to miss some detail from the past.

Re: Difficult Ignition Cutout Problem
It acts instead like they do when the hep cuts out. The tach dies and coincides with the cutout. About the only thing I haven't changed is the ais. Maybe I'll give that a try.
Re: Difficult Ignition Cutout Problem
Brian, I forget what does the scanner report?
Could I ask for a favour?? Would you add a section to your original posting with an executive summary of what you repaired/checked on this issue?
Re: Difficult Ignition Cutout Problem
Cordes, does this car still have fusable links. I noticed that J1 in my "86" fsm goes to the ignition. A broken but still connected J1 might do this.
Re: Difficult Ignition Cutout Problem
many years ago I had a TII that threw a code for the ais
so I replaced it with anew one
I still had the same issue and code after installing the new ais motor so I looked it over and asked myself
"what's the closest related thing next to the ais?"
so I swapped the TPS sensor off the car beside it
the issue went away as did the code
so ..I tried the old ais motor..nope issue and code came back
tried again .. swapped the tps and the code n issue also came back
at no time did it ever throw a code for the tps..
but it absolutely wanted ,both
Re: Difficult Ignition Cutout Problem
Well, the aisle is about the only thing I haven't changed. I'll give that a go next, and I'll try to update the op with a synopsis of all I've done.
Re: Difficult Ignition Cutout Problem
were you lookin for an affordable oscilloscope ?
someone mentioned it lately..
no idea if this would be what you would be lookin for but here ya go
60 bucks ?

found it shoppin guitar stuff .. thus the vid format

Re: Difficult Ignition Cutout Problem
Thanks for the suggestion. I think I'm getting close to needing one as a last hail mary.
Re: Difficult Ignition Cutout Problem
OK, it's time to get this going again as the weather is changing.
For a recap, I've replaced the LM, PM, all sensors with the exception of the AIS, the wiring harness, alternator, HEP, Dist, battery, ignition switch, and more. I've tried to run added grounds, and power to the LM, all with no real improvement.
The one thing I haven't done is change out the battery terminals from the ones I initially installed and added better grounds. I did add a larger ground which goes behind the battery, but I wonder if the large size of the terminal lug at the body might be too much for the longer screw and washer to get good contact? Could the repainted engine bay be causing a ground issue due to the thicker paint? We'll find out.
Does anyone have a link to a set of ground straps, or star terminals which they would recommend? I want to replace the ground from the intake to firewall, and certainly the one which bridges the passenger side motor mount. I'm open to any suggestions on this front. I did buy some fairly nice battery terminals which I will be using nice lugs to secure the cables to rather than pinching the wires with a bolt. It should offer significantly better surface area.
Again, any ideas are more than welcome. If it weren't for all the money and time I have into making this harness as nice as possible, I would ditch it all for one of the microsquirt kits I have on hand.
Thanks again to all for the continued support and help with this project. I've never had anything this difficult before. It's had me stumped for way too long.
Re: Difficult Ignition Cutout Problem
dash harness and 50 way firewall connector issue? intermittent small short or break in the circuit that feeds the fuel pump/injectors/coil?
Brian
Re: Difficult Ignition Cutout Problem
That could be. I believe I have a spare dash harness but I forget which year. I guess that might be up after the grounds. This thing is a ton of fun!
Re: Difficult Ignition Cutout Problem
I can't imagine you didn't check this but did you inspect pin 17 in the red LM plug for corrosion or a pushed back socket? This sure sounds like a ASD problem that Brian helped me with that did exact same thing.

Yes. All pins have been inspected, cleaned, and treated with Deoxit.
I did get the new battery terminals on today. They are nice, but gaudy. The 3/8 terminal ends on the cables are all 2ga size with some of them having a couple wires each in them. I used my hydraulic crimper to mash them all down. I think this eliminates that being a problem at all. Next up, I'll unplug the AIS motor and carry on.
Re: Difficult Ignition Cutout Problem
Just ordered an Oscilloscope...
Re: Difficult Ignition Cutout Problem
Took the car to the store for a 1 mile round trip. It's scared...
The only changes I made were to reset the base idle, and keep the AIS unplugged. I also disconnected all solenoids and ran straight vac to the WG. The car ran flawlessly. Of course, now I have to see if I can break the ~40-50 mile record before it starts breaking up again. This car is so much fun.
ETA: The record stands. It cut out just a little a couple times on my normal tuning loop. I went back the opposite direction, and it cut out badly when I tried to merge onto a fairly busy road. The car may be trying to kill me.
