Side Mirror Replacement tips
My original driver's side mirror has been missing a big chunk out of it ever since I bought the car back in '96. Yeeeeears ago, I snagged one from a shadow in the JY with a nice housing as most of them even back in the day were faded and dry-rotted. But, this one has a shattered mirror inside, so I had planned to simply swap mirrors to the better housing and re-install. It's a bit dark out for me to peer inside it, but it looks like if I max it out to one side, I can see the attachment mechanism that secures it in there....
Anyone know the *proper* way to snap it out of there w/out breaking it? (looks like there's some sort of clip in there from what little I can see)
Re: Side Mirror Replacement tips
The mirror glass is glued into the plastic frame which is then glued onto the controller head. Theres 3 or 4 little torx head screws (like T10 or T15 size bit) that secure the 'guts' into the housing. By carefully moving the glass one way to get the screws and then back the other way to get the others. Its been a few years since I've taken any apart (taking 6 junk mirrors to make 2 good ones) but I can get a picture tomorrow of what your going to come across. competition car is manual mirrors right ?
Re: Side Mirror Replacement tips
Yes, manual everything on this car except for a "Power Motor" hehehe
Re: Side Mirror Replacement tips
Some of 'em have a socket and ball joint you have to pop it out of, which on aged plastic can result in breakage coming out or going in.

Heres some pictures... Been awhile and there were some differences between power/manual but like I remembered it being before. There are 3 t-10 torx bit screws, two on the inside edge closer to the door and 1 on the outside. Mirror to glass assembly isnt really made to come apart. But on the inside there is a tiny little set screw on the back edge of the trim panel where the knob is mounted. (That picture was taken upside down.) I would just remove the set screw and swap the entire assembly to your clean housing rather than try to undo the glass.

Maybe I'm confused, but I want to swap the entire innards of my existing mirror into the housing I currently have. The mirror removal is simple, just switching them might not be... the donor mirror assembly has a smashed mirror.
Re: Side Mirror Replacement tips
you dont need the Internets help for this one, you just need to go do it.

And I did. It's amazing what some actual light can do!
There's 3 small phillips screws securing the entire mirror assembly into the housing. You need to max out the mirror to get to each screw, but it's rather easy.
