A555 spider CARNAGE!

Welp, when putting new bearings in this transmission there was far more metal build up on the magnet than the bad counter shaft + bearing showed missing if that makes any sense.

I decided to drive the roll pin out of the differential and boy am I glad I did. This was ready to grenade at any moment.

Emailed Chris to see how long a quaife will take to get in my hands.

So much for getting the Mini on the road tomorrow. :(


***In case the Quaife will take a long time does anyone have a good set of spiders + pin or can someone point me to the right direction to buy new?

Another option would be to get a 520 diff. If I'm not mistaken, the way that the 555 van transmissions are made, it would bolt right up. You could also bolt in an OBX if you can find one for sale.

The 520 diff won't fit but the spiders, pinion gears and shaft will fit.

Many 555's had a much better 4 pin diff and should be available cheap.

I have a couple extra ones left over from my posi experiments but shipping would be high.

I believe the ring gear fits the carrier differently than the 555 ring gear does.

Also from what I understand the 520 vs 555 ring gear teeth are different.

I've always been of the understanding that the van 555s had what was essentially a 3.85FD ring gear on a 520 type diff. This thread has really piqued my interest.

The '89 and '90 Minivan A555s were actually '88 transmissions requiring the older style rebuild kits.

A 555/A 568 diff. is open on the ring gear end, the ring gear is actually the end cover for the diff assembly.

If you seperate the diff from the ring gear, the axle gear isn't contained inside the diff carrier. (see pic above)

All the other diffs are "self contained" and when unbolted from the ring gear both axle gears stay inside.

520 can be 3:85 or 3:50 but all 555/568 are factory 3:85.

Hybrids can be built but along with the ring gear the matching int shaft must be used.

As mentioned the 1989 minivan 555 is the same as a 1987-88 car unit, where 1989 car 555 is a bit different inside.

To build a hybrid 1989 car 555 requires 523 parts.

Not all received 4 pins but that's the reason the diff is built using the ring gear as the end cover.

The one above is a 2 pinion, a 4 pinion has another 2 pinions (spiders)

Tomorrow I will post pictures of the whole carrier assembly to have a fresh recent thread with pictures.

It now makes sense as to why a replacement counter shaft was a challenge the whole 89 van having 87-88 car 555 on it.

Thanks for the clarification Randy. It seems as though I've been misinformed, or interpreted people's posts about the van transmissions very poorly. I was under the impression that they essentially had a 520 diff with a 3.85 ring gear on them. I didn't realize that there wasn't really a difference between the van 555 and anything else with the exception of the number of spiders in the diff and the fact that they used the 87-88 style synchro and 5th gear snap ring.

I'm really happy to have that cleared up, as I have always wanted to find one for the purpose of being able to use an OBX as a drop in with a 3.85FD. I just hope I haven't spread this misinformation too far.

I'm going to try and attach a few 555 pics for reference, couldn't find any online.

One is a complete 4 pin and the others are an empty 4 pin.

Thanks for the 4 pin pics. I was wondering what they looked like. Mine's 100% a single pin setup and boy was it hammered!

I couldn't even get the roll pin out. I just used a press and forced the spider pin out in turn shearing the roll pin. It then came right out!

I have a hunch that the spider pin had slightly twisted the roll pin. I think the next step was the pin punching a hole in the trans housing.

Right on !!

You might consider locating a used 4 pin unless you go Quaife.

There are many unused as the assembly gets discarded when someone goes Quaife or builds a Hybrid.

Ejected diff pins are a common cause of FWD transmission death. You can add pin savers to keep the pin from leaving the housing.

This is very solid advice.

Oh yeah I was fully aware of Chrysler's relatively weak spider gear assemble and the little savers.

I did order a Quaife from TU but it will be weeks before it gets here and i would like to put this together and drive it a while in the meantime.
