So Can A Rear Main Get Trashed...
By loose parts inside the bellhouse? Was driving the Rampage RT this am, hit cars and coffee (the new one in Aliso Viejo as the famous original in Irvine is now gone) Not sure if related or not but got into a nice from a roll second thru mid forth against a new type S Tesla(he did a from behind flyby and I was a half second late on mashing it so he had two cars on me that he kept til middle of third, by top of third I got one back but then I lost one again on 3-4shift. Slowly reeled him in in forth but ran outta road and balls before I could get even. They're F'n fast!) Ten minutes later just rolling along in third at 45 or so, GAWD AWEFUL grinding and popcorn noises as something went round and round inside bellhouse(at least that's what my thought was). Pulled over and a massive amount of engine oil is now dripping out inspection window. Like a drop a second while running. Clutch feels normal but does change pitch when depressed. Pulling the trans was not on my project list, the intake manifold is off the 928 to fix a water leak, the motor is apart on the GNX, the top end on the RoadRace GLHS is partly disassembled for freshing with a better cam and TU Cast Manifold. I do not need another car down:banghead: So can a loose bolt or ??? Take out the rear main? Where the F else could the oil be pouring out of? Not even gonna put it in the air today, gonna ride the Ducati to a buds house to swim drink and watch Maywether/PacMan fight. Think I'll start drinking now...
Re: So Can A Rear Main Get Trashed...
to get something between the flywheel and block might be a challenge but it's all to easy to crack the front of the trans inside the bellhouseing - even without trying to beat on it
trans related might explain the diff sound steping on the clutch

Pretty certain it's too dark for trans oil. This motor dirties the oil with frightening rapidity, I have maybe 800 miles since the last change and it's dark already:confused:
Re: So Can A Rear Main Get Trashed...
Oil galley plug letting go? Either that or something damaged the rear main. Sounds like tranny needs to be pulled regardless:(
Re: So Can A Rear Main Get Trashed...
If a flywheel bolt came out, those thread right through the crank to the inside of the engine. Otherwise if you aren't running the lower shield something might have gotten spit out hard enough to damage the pan. I think it's unlikely the rear main would have been damaged.
Re: So Can A Rear Main Get Trashed...
Now Alan, the "original" was at Crystal Cove :) sorry to hear about your misfortune. Funny you use the term "F'n Fast" The local one here has the plates "FNBEAST" Drives around town flooring it away from every light. But yet we blew by him last summer on the way back from Seattle cause he was doing 55 to our 75. So even a measly 210hp car will beat one eventually :)

Hmm, interesting thought, I'd have to look at a crank but I thought they dead-headed into crank steel flange? You very well may have won a cookie Jeremy;)
Re: So Can A Rear Main Get Trashed...
All the 2.2/2.5 cranks I have ever seen thread right through the flywheel flange. It would certainly be a hell of an oil leak. The flywheel/flexplate bolt holes on the crank go right through to the inside right all around the #5 main.
Re: So Can A Rear Main Get Trashed...
if you stand a 2.2 on it's back end , say in a scrap pile and the bolts are out of the end of the crank ..
you get a big huge bleepin mess
Re: So Can A Rear Main Get Trashed...
Given the noise you said it made. I agree: crank bolt. #2 on my list would be the main oil galley plug coming loose, but if that came out, I'd think you would be getting a lot more oil than 1 drop a second...
Either way, you're going to have to pull the trans...

I agree that a crank bolt makes sense but for some reason my mind went to clutch springs/parts etc. I texted the clutch manufacturer about the issue but haven't heard back yet. It sux that I have to pull the trans to know for sure. Not happy

And what's worse, Pacman didn't show up for the fight! :( My wife and her clan were pissed.
Re: So Can A Rear Main Get Trashed...
My money is also on a flywheel bolt.

Oh yeah, that lol, agreed. :(
Re: So Can A Rear Main Get Trashed...
In all the TM's over all the years I've never lost a flywheel bolt before. I know I loc-tited them but maybe I should have used new ones as well. I know the FSM calls them single use fasteners.

I've found them to be at least a 3 time use fastener!

3 time, I've used them so many times to count, lol.
Re: So Can A Rear Main Get Trashed...
Even torque to yield bolts are reusable as long as they aren't stretched.
Re: So Can A Rear Main Get Trashed...
Tranny fluid plus clutch dust would be pretty black I'd have thunk. But would smell different to oil.
If something seriously came apart like the flywheel splitting in half, or puck flying off clutch, then I could see enough imbalance happening to mess up the rear main. But I think you'd feel it shaking your teeth out, rather than just hearing nasty sounds. So yah, bolt out, or something bounced around enough to find seal and grind it.
The extreme bad luck version is middle of flywheel cracked out and crank walked/popped out.
Re: So Can A Rear Main Get Trashed...
That sounds very familiar. The popping anyhow. I heard some stuff like that driving my R/T several years back after getting on it. Drove it home & parked it. Car sat for several months as winter was approaching and I had no drive to figure it out. I noticed that it was dripping oil when running sometime during the winter when I had to move it, figured rear main as well since the dripping stopped shortly after the engine was shut off. Pulled the trans and found part of a diff pin poking out into the bellhousing. The car drove just fine with just that popping popcorn noise which I now realize was a piece of the bellhousing bouncing around. The diff had a PhantomGrip in it FWIW. Thankfully nothing else was damaged in the trans due to the low oil level.
