My short 1986 Omni Turbo project log
I finally gathered the strength to roll my car outside to wash the Engine bay.
It's still a chore to walk to my shop that's only about 100 ft. from the house.
The darn stroke a few years back has robbed me of all strength and energy.
But the bellyaching is over, for now, I'm proudly finished the washing!!
Next up is to complete a few small details on the replacement Engine.
And then to begin the install, hopefully with some help!
Thanks
Randy

Re: My short 1986 Omni Turbo project log
After weeks of work, I have my 2.5 Engine just about ready to drop in place.
One handed progress is painfully slow but also very rewarding.
I'm going to need a lot of assistance dropping it into place.
My friend Brian, SPEEDFREEK500 will be orchestrating.
Thanks
Randy

Re: My short 1986 Omni Turbo project log
I appreciate the kind encouragement guys and pray my stamina holds up !!
My custom built 3" down pipe doesn't fit the 2 1/4" swing valve.
Somehow I lost the 2 1/2" swing valve that matched my D.P
One more unexpected item to deal with.
Nothing too bad, I will keep at it!!
Thanks
Randy

Great to hear the progress Randy! I know I can't be easy but stay confident in your tasks and just plan some extra time. Hopefully nearby friends can help you along when you need it.
It wouldn't be timely with shipping but I can look to see if I have a 2.5" swingvalve housing.
I'm not sure what I took off of Slug and Mini, as they both have ATP ones now. I can dig around tomorrow after work if you need/want it!

Re: My short 1986 Omni Turbo project log
I ran into an issue with my P/S mounting bracket.
Trying to use my original 1986 L body P/S on the C/B Engine.
Anyone know if there are different Saginaw P/S mounting brackets??
As the old chinaman once declared some-ting-wong with me and car!!
Could I be missing a spacer between the block face and bracket??
I don't have any parts left over but have a considerable gap.
Still struggling with diminished brain capacity and one hand.
Any kind input is appreciated!!
Thanks
Randy

Re: My short 1986 Omni Turbo project log
I believe my 2.5 shelby z still had it's original ps pump and bracket mounted to it
do you have the big passenger side motor mount bracket on the end of the block..?
forgetting that while test fitting the pump bracket would give you a bit of a gap at the end of the block
-
Re: My short 1986 Omni Turbo project log
Yes, I have the big pass. side Engine bracket on.
But it doesn't go under the PS bracket??
Thanks
Randy

Re: My short 1986 Omni Turbo project log
yes the mount bracket goes on first then the power steering bracket
how much gap do you seem to have?
I've had an issue in the past where the steering bracket doesn't want to line up to the thread hole in the back of the block when tight against the mount bracket
usually seemed to wide for the space between the bolt hole and the studs - so I slipped the bracket on the studs and started the bolt in the back - then tighten the nuts on the studs.
it seemed to squeeze down to size when I did it that way (maybe 1/4-3/8 inch ?)

Re: My short 1986 Omni Turbo project log
DING DING, DING We have a winner !!!
Dr Johnny Dodge !!
I had the Engine mount on but couldn't get the bracket bolted up.
I removed the front stud, bolted the lower and slipped the bracket on.
After that, the block face stud and bolt went in and all is good, no gap.
The bracket must have been slightly sprung to cause me this grief.
Everything else is going good but I'm very slow these days.
Thanks
Randy

Re: My short 1986 Omni Turbo project log
good news Randy !! glad you got it worked out..
I'm thinking maybe this is an issue when installing a bare / empty bracket without the pump bolted into it already .. so , maybe fitting the pump into the bracket might get tight now..?
if so simply loosen those two nuts on the studs holding both the pump and mount bracket to allow the bracket to expand again.. install pump & tighten everything..

Re: My short 1986 Omni Turbo project log
Yesterday afternoon I finally started up my Omni !!
Reached in the drivers window, rocked the key and it fired right up.
It runs fine so now I need to drop it down off the jack stands.
Looking forward to my first test drive in a good many years.
All I'm running is my 3" down pipe (thanks Wayne Hemingway)
My exhaust guy is over an hour away so I'm looking forward to the drive!!
Thanks
Randy

Re: My short 1986 Omni Turbo project log
Another small update.
The front calipers are supposed to be here tomorrow!!
Wasn't able to find any new ones so settled for remans.
Hopefully I can get them on properly and go for a drive.
Reinstalling the hood alone is going to be a challenge.
I forgot to ask Tefon for a hand when he visited Saturday
Thanks
Randy

Re: My short 1986 Omni Turbo project log
Finally, I got the brakes sorted out and the little Omni runs and drives just fine!!
I got tired of waiting for Tefon to come back but I got the hood installed anyways.
Two neighbors, one on each side of me, dropped by so they each lent me a hood hand.
The weather is terrible so I'm waiting for a break in it to drive the hr. to my exhaust friend.
He's planing on building me a full 3" mandrel bent system from down pipe to the back.
I have a new polished (Magna flow??) 3" in-out muffler on the shelf waiting for duty.
Luckily I have some M&S rated tires installed for the journey on these winter roads.
I sold my 225-50-15" performance tires a while back as they were close to expiring.
A Miata guy was happy to get them as he burns them up in a couple of weekends.
If anyone is still following along, please wish me luck in this weather!!:eyebrows:
Thanks
Randy
PS: Lets go Brandon !!!

Glad to hear it's coming along, Randy! Let's hear that exhaust when you get it done 👍

Re: My short 1986 Omni Turbo project log
Hey, good to hear it's on the road again, and glad someone was able to help with the hood installation. That Tefon guy is so unreliable, you could be waiting forever for him to come back.
-
Re: My short 1986 Omni Turbo project log
I was only razzing you about the hood!!
I'm sure you're very reliable as I eavestroughed you on the phone with your wife.
She sounded great and and smart so there's no doubt she didn't marry Mr Unreliable!
Thanks
Randy

Re: My short 1986 Omni Turbo project log
I now have my full 3" mandrel bent exhaust !!
Added a crankcase evac port and a A/F monitor sensor bung as well.
It was worth the drive visiting with my old friend as well as getting the work done.
The man is an exhaust genius in my book snaking the pipe through the rear suspension !!
My little Omni is filthy from the roads, but like Arnie said in the movie Christine, $h!t wipes off.:)
Thanks
Randy

Re: My short 1986 Omni Turbo project log
Glad to hear Randy!
We're you able to get any pics while it was up in the air?
Sounds great though. Can't wait to hear how you like it once you can put some power to the ground, maybe like 6 months from now, when your winter is over! Lol!

Re: My short 1986 Omni Turbo project log
I appreciate the positive input guys!!
Now my Dad is in the hospital with severe abdominal pain.
Mom is doing reasonably well after her unfortunate car crash.
The DMV cancelled her license as her crash was the result of a stroke.
Her Dr. says she can re-apply in a few months but he may be placating her??
Fortunately, they live in a small city so taxi's are a reasonable way to get around.
I feel helpless living 3,000 miles away but would feel about the same living closer.
My sister lives just a few blocks away but she is also laid up with a broken ankle.
Thank God for a kind and able brother in law for all the helpful things he does!
Unfortunately, I didn't get any exhaust pics. this time due to circumstances.
The chassis was all muddy as my friend now lives on a gravel and dirt road.
His home is very beautiful and located on a picturesque lake front lot.
His shop is meager and his hoist only lifts the car less than 5 ft.
I banged my head on it every time I tried to have a look or help!
However, great work can be done in less than ideal surroundings.
He doesn't work commercially, he just did this as a favor.
My cost was only $150.00, parts and labor.
Defiantly a favor for a quality job.
Thanks
Randy

Sounds like you have quite a bit going on. Hopefully the car project will keep you spirits up. Keep at it!

Re: My short 1986 Omni Turbo project log
Appreciate the kind words!
The little car has continued to keep my spirits up since Feb. 22, 1986.
It's the only new car I ever bought for myself but my wife tends to get a new one every 10 yrs.
Until this year, her 2011 Chrysler 200 will probably be with her for a while now that she's retired.
Her previous car, a 2001 Sebring sedan, 2.7 still serves as a reliable backup with over 350 K!!
Thanks
Randy
