How to test quality of 60 way female pins
I bought a few new Molex female connectors (33088-0009) for the 60 way ECU connector, I wanted to replace a few poor connections on an old 60 way.
connector thread http://www.turbo-mopar.com/forums/sh...=1#post1029585
A new connector grips a #54 drill bit but not a #55 (0.055" vs 0.052". Remember that the male pin on the ECU are hollow split and can be adjusted to be a few thous larger for good contact. I use a known good female to check for proper friction fit.
as a sidenote, I have tested a used 60 way I had on the shelf and a few of the 60 had a poor connection. From this data, I would to suggestion checking the 60 way with a #54 bit (shalf end please to reduce the possibility of cutting the inside of the connector.
Does anyone know the cream coloured grease that ships inside the female connector? I would guess white lithium grease.
Or do you know of any good product for these connections? dielectric grease? Deoxit5?
Re: How to test quality of 60 way female pins
you know my standard responce to elecrtical conector protectant is
rust check , rust check rust check
even says good for electrical connections and helps preserve insolation right on the can I believe
best of all your connectors never collect crud and grime.. 'cause there isn't a glob of grease for stuff to stick to
-and spritzing the connector with the rattle can of rust check will also blast out any crud that did find a way in
keeps the connection waterproof .. keeps the wires from turning green - no electrical grease I've found does that
it's part of my rust check routine
spritz the connectors , all of 'em and hose down the back side of the strut towers at the seam to the firewall
in all the years I never had an issue at a connector but the big fused together splice in the ground cable between the alternator , head and battery did bite my backside once
rust check might actually help remove any existing green corrosion too

Thanks I can see Rust Check working

Re: How to test quality of 60 way female pins
I decided to see what is the internal structure and if one could improve the performance with a worn contact. The good news is yes and it is easy. Use a small safety pinto pry each of the contact half towards the centre slightly. If the wire crimp is at 12 noon, the pry points are 90 degrees at 9am and 3pm.
Here are pictures so you can see what I am referring to.
Re: How to test quality of 60 way female pins
Might have to give this a try. Yet again this morning it decided to start its cutting out BS again. Wiggle some wires and things came back to life...
Re: How to test quality of 60 way female pins
Interesting, I never realized how they were made. I was able to find a repair 60 pin connector on eBay, an actual OEM MOPAR and was able to order a pair from one of my good MOPAR sources. They were for a different application than the SBEC, but were easily modified by opening up the needed holes, and using the supplied blanking pins for unused, pre-drilled holes. They come with an assortment of wires, purple and orange with purple being probably 18 ga and orange 16 ga. I will try to get the PN and a picture later. The back shell that covers and protects the wiring is not included as it is location specific and easily swapped.
I need to see if I can use one of those and a connector from a bad SBEC to modify my Ford 60 pin EEC-IV breakout box to use on SBECs which could be a big help.
Re: How to test quality of 60 way female pins
The 60 way connector repair kits come in a few different part numbers.
5013934AA
5013935AA
5013936AA
5013937AA
5013938AA
5013939AA
The -37AA is grey for the EATX controller, and maybe the ABS but IDK for sure. The two indexing tabs are further apart so they cannot interchange.
The others are interchangeable for our purposes, the difference is the 'clocking' position of the back shell and some have all the holes opened, some have the center row on both sides still solid.
Re: How to test quality of 60 way female pins
Glad you had the numbers, I was going to grab my unused spare and see what the number was. I did find a complete later catalog of Chrysler connectors on-line and have actually ordered and used some of the 10 way male/female ones. They have nice flat pins and very solid sockets, are weather sealed and come with pigtails. Easy to assemble, male/female pins snap in and the locking insert is pushed down until it snaps into place. The ones I bought also have the positive lock on the release latch.
Re: How to test quality of 60 way female pins
Those sound like the APEX 2.8's With some heat/age/weather cycling they tend to stick and refuse to come apart easily but they do make a very solid reliable connection, they were developed for the diesel engine applications where heat and vibration attack everything.

I was talking on Sunday with my best buddy in Nova Scotia (this is Latin for salt on roads....LOL) I have never seen a place worse for salt. He worked for 20+ years for Ryder trucks as a diesel mechanic. I asked him which product is best on electrical connection especially under salty condition.
He said Rust Check, Rust Check the one with the red cap....
Re: How to test quality of 60 way female pins

Re: How to test quality of 60 way female pins

Re: How to test quality of 60 way female pins
That's great! However, there are no Canadian Tire stores here. I have sent a contact message to them asking if there are any dealers or distributors here.

can't open the door .. then you can't latch it again .. real nice didge real nice..
Re: How to test quality of 60 way female pins
I used rust check to free up a super rare holley spread bore 830 carb with a seized throttle plate
(subs for dodge thermoquad)
I put the T-plate in a plastic pan about the same size and sprayed rust check on it until I had it soaking in the pan
-kicked it under my truck in the garage -- remembered it (found) in the spring and it worked like new
it will make all your bolt heads steel gray again if they are not flaked with rust
check is to rust as check is to hockey ...STOP ...NOW I TAKE THAT AWAY FROM YOU
Re: How to test quality of 60 way female pins
I used the link to the company website and sent them a message. I asked about dealers or distributors in the US, no list, but did hear back from Mitch Romeo at Rust Check. He asked what I would looking for and gave me two options, a 6 pack of 350g aerosol cans or a 12 pack of 180g aerosol cans. I asked for price and shipping on the latter as it will probably be better for me.
Now if we can just get it imported into the US so others can benefit from it.

I typed in my Pa zip code and it showed a few in NY/Ohio
Looks like one in North Carolina also
I'd like to try some myself, my garage has alot of air flow and likes to flash rust stuff on these warm days / cold nights
Re: How to test quality of 60 way female pins
the stuff also smells .. well , nice .. its meant to so the inside of your car won't smell like chemicals
there's rust check shops that are rust proofing spray shops .. up on the hoist and sprayed with a commercial unit
guaranteed for life .. no holes if you do it every year
