I could have gone faster but the point I was trying to make at the time was that the basic pieces were pretty darn stout and you could go fast without a lot of shiny parts.
The car was put into the 12's which was the goal with a minimum of money. We got Jon's Shadow into the 11's with a Super 60 turbocharger and a NPR intercooler.
Your looking at a junkyard 52 mm throttle body, SAAB cold start valve with pressure switch, a diode for the map cut off, back cut valves, a boost controller made from some brass at Home Depot, an exhaust system made from a box of elbows and a home ported exhaust manifold. Cam timing was adjusted with keys from Mopar Performance (before someone brought cam sprockets to market, cough-cough)
All and all pretty low buck.
I did install a double core intercooler in the car after but never made hard track passes to see how it picked up. Doing testing on the dyno the stock intercooler was a massive restriction at 20 psi, the pressure difference between inlets and outlets was 5 psi.
Re: WANTED! List of Unique and Historical Shelby Dodges / Turbo Mopars!
I think I'll never get over how fast guys went back when with what they were working with. I can only imagine what people's reactions were like at the track when they see a FWD 4cyl going 12s with nothing but a couple of JY parts and stuff from home depot. Unreal.
Re: WANTED! List of Unique and Historical Shelby Dodges / Turbo Mopars!
If you can get all those runs in at the track to even make a meaningful adjustment is luck...at least in my experience. There have been very few times I have went to a drag strip and been able to run the car enough to know if an adjustment worked. Typically it's at least an hour between runs. I know I'm not the best driver, but how can you or the car be consistent enough to tune in that kind of circumstance?
I'm not bashing anyone, I'm saying that if you can tune at your track, you are lucky!

Consistency is the key, time slips (and video) speak for themselves.
I even did a cam swap at the track to see if there was any gains to be had, hot 20 minutes work.

I remember you posting about that...I think back in the SDML days. I just have always had bad luck trying to do any tuning at the track because it's always packed those times. :-(
Anyway, we agree that track tuning is key to going the fastest you can with what you have to work with. :thumb:
Re: WANTED! List of Unique and Historical Shelby Dodges / Turbo Mopars!
This great thread needs to be resurrected:
I would like to add 5digits SCCA Show Room Stock Dodge Shelby Charger Christine to the list.
Also the Chrysler / Shelby Performance Center's all wheel drive, 16 valve Hans Hermann powered Daytona prototype (my Unicorn. I love this car!).
Re: WANTED! List of Unique and Historical Shelby Dodges / Turbo Mopars!
My red 91 Spirit R/T is presently being used as a daily driver on bad New Jersey roads, during a sweltering summer. I think that's pretty historic! :)
Re: WANTED! List of Unique and Historical Shelby Dodges / Turbo Mopars!
The last Maserati TC built. 1991, white, bordeaux interior, 16V 5-speed (1 of 501 and the LAST one). Currently resides down near Tacoma, Wa if I'm not mistaken. The car was a special order Chrysler executive car. The interior color and engine were technically not available in 1991.

Re: WANTED! List of Unique and Historical Shelby Dodges / Turbo Mopars!
I own a 91 Spirit R/T with over 200,000 miles and originally from Texas. My dad bought it in 1993 as a trade-in when he was a salesman at a Chrysler dealership. It's a red base R/T and the original head was replace under warranty and has had most of the FWD-P durability upgrades. Last time it ran around a 12.9 with a Turbonetics 50 trim @ 16 psi. Currently it sits with a new Holset HE-351 from Jackson Simler and is waiting for minor resto-mod and lifters.

but one you guys forgot to list is a 257,000+ mile one of 84 made Plymouth Horizon 4 dr that came stock from the factory with the GLH HO carb motor and close ratio 5 speed. Only one built with no a/c and radio delete. NOT a show car by ANY stretch of the imagination, but it has won the vast majority of my 34 NHRA/IHRA Championships.
The 1st FWD car to win a NHRA "Wally" for bracket racing (189 cars-87 Div 3 ET finals)
The 2nd FWD car to win that trophy period (1st one was by a Escort in a Div race a bit earlier in stock class)
The ONLY FWD car to win the Corvette Nats....T W I C E! (It was always a 2 day event and I got runner up on the saturday portions with the 11 second car, giving them all headstarts, then win with the slow one on sundays portion!)
The 1st FWD car to win a NHRA track championship (Bunker Hill in 85)
If you guys Google search Angelo Taylor Racing you will find a couple of pics of the 81 Euro Sedan Horizon (a rare car just with that pkg) that was the 1st carb car in the 13s....then the guy that bought it put a stock 220 hp 440 in the back...drove it there on the 4 cyl with 4 speed, then hooked up a shorty drive shaft to use the big block while leaving the 4 in neutral! Old Four Play was its name and with that set up it was slower than my nitrous fed Omni.
Old Matchbox is now just short of 315,000 miles and has won the vast majority of my 47 NHRA/IHRA Championships....I don't count wins, just championships

If you have your best timeslip from the GLH we can add it to Turbo-Mopar Times page
