Getting a Transmission shipped?
Okay,
Not sure if this is the right forum, so move it if you need to. Here goes:
I am looking at buying a transmission and the only rate quotes I seem to be able to find are talking about $400+ to ship the transmission. Does anyone have a better idea? That was FedEx freight, UPS hasn't gotten back to me, and I don't know who else to call. If getting a transmission is going to be this expensive and tough, it might mean the end of my lebaron... HELP!

Re: Getting a Transmission shipped?
$95 on average to ship a 5spd. Dont select frieght. That is what I am spending to ship to Cliff Ramsdell. That doesnt include the supplies to package it either. For autos, its more as you have to ship the torque convertor seperately to meet the 150lb weight restriction.

Re: Getting a Transmission shipped?
Okay, That makes more sense. How are you packing it up Frank? If I may ask? Yeah, I was selecting freight because that's what I thought it would be. About how much does it weigh after pulling the TC?
I'm clueless, I know this. Thanks all!

A dry auto with no converter in a plastic container is 140lb. You have to use a rubbermaid 35gal type to ship it, a real container puts it over the 150lb limit.

Re: Getting a Transmission shipped?
Awesome
Thank you so much for your quick responses all. I now if I can just figure out the other few small issues I have with my baron, I could get it up and running again in no time. Thanks again.

PM me your dad's addy for shipping these trannies. Have been stuggling getting ahold of him thru electronic means. Also who do you secure the rubbermaid 35gals? I am using cargo/tie straps. Think that will fly with UPS? I know they arent coming off.

Done. We secure ours the same way, drill through the lid and the lip, use a tiewrap through the holes. One in each corner and three more on each side usually suffice.

Re: Getting a Transmission shipped?
Ahh! I like the tiewrap better! Beats the cargo strap I had setup. Thanks!

Re: Getting a Transmission shipped?
Ya... forgot to tell you that. My previous address listing was accepted for the online method, but then they were never picked up and I finally got the reason why. Unfortunetly they wont pick them back up until Wednesday now that I have the right address. I have time to revise the securing methods.... They are sitting outside waiting no matter what.

Re: Getting a Transmission shipped?
I just shipped two transaxles (A523 & A568) and an OBX to Cliff. Used one big wooden box to ship it all together. $245 via freight from Wyoming to Conneticuit.

Re: Getting a Transmission shipped?
Drain it, box it, then fedex it.

Here are pictures of the trannies going out tomorrow... $93 each to ship.

Re: Getting a Transmission shipped?
That's picture makes me anxious... What did you use for packing material? We ship huge steel boxes at work, and we've had them dropped so hard in shipping that the welds on the doors actually broke (these are from Hammond MFG for anyone who deals with enclosures, so they aren't garbage welds either).

Re: Getting a Transmission shipped?
Lots of foam. Its a chance ya take. I did declare their values at 400 each.

Re: Getting a Transmission shipped?
We have a guide from UPS at work and on normal ground/express shipments it states they should be able to be dropped from shoulder height and not damage the goods. When we ship LTL it's pretty much the same.

Re: Getting a Transmission shipped?
That's what insurance is for.
-
Re: Getting a Transmission shipped?
Insurance only goes so far. We once had to rebuild about 4 days worth of dedicated work, which for a small company is a big hit, and our customer still didn't have a working product, so they were upset at us, regardless of the reasoning. In our case, the shipping company screwed us over (yellow freight, stay away) and we ended up taking the hit and just getting our parts shipped back to us for use on RMAs.

Speaking of which, where in the hell did you get that box? It showed up today at the shop and christ is that thing big.

Re: Getting a Transmission shipped?
Heheh got it at my mom's office; she works for the school district here. I have no idea what they used it for. Good to hear it arrived.
I had a small wooden box that I kept when I bought a used A555 on eBay a while back, but since I had to ship two transaxles and the OBX, I figured I'd just use the one big box.

How did you ship them? My 555/520 hybrid w/ OBX in a 30 gallon tote was $66.15 going UPS ground w/ $1500 insurance. I do get a discount on UPS from my shipping department at work. Just curious.

He shipped them ups. I find that fedex is a bit cheaper and more reliable than ups. Not a lot on the money side, maybe $10 or so, but stuff seems to arrive in better condition with fedex.
p.s - Please god, no "but I love ups and fedex sucks" stories, just a personal observation it's not the start of a war.

Re: Getting a Transmission shipped?
Btw, how did that foam do that I put in there? Rather getto approach, but those floaties seemed like it was going to be good.

Worked great, we were laughing when I opened the totes and pulled them out with the stickers still on them. They seemed to do a a good job, so I reused them when I packed them back up yesterday.

Re: Getting a Transmission shipped?
hehehe. i figured you would get a kick out of that. i had been searching for good foam, then i cam across those in Wal-Mart. 1-buck each for long ones... quick cut and wham! LOL. They do compress too much under the tranny, so it requires something better.

It'll fit, but you need to pack it in with a lot of padding. Total weight comes out to about 110lbs for a 555, add a couple more for a quaiffe or obx.
-
Re: Getting a Transmission shipped?
so will it fit in any less than a 35 gal container,or will it fit a 25
-
Re: Getting a Transmission shipped?
35gal is the only one that will work.

Re: Getting a Transmission shipped?
Wow. Only cost me around $70 to ship a boxed transmission via Fed Ex. If you have two, I would recommend shipping in two boxes, instead of one. Shipiing is cheaper. Founf that out when shipping wheels and tires, via fed ex. Saved me around. $30

Re: Getting a Transmission shipped?
I shipped mine today. Transmission and OBX were shipped in a 42 gallon rubbermaid rolling trash can. With all the packing it weighed 126 pounds and dimensions were 36x24x21. Without my girlfriends Fedex discount, it would have been $110.17 with $2,000 insurance from Wisconsin to Arizona. I got it for half price.
Incase it helps others. . .

Re: Getting a Transmission shipped?
How about expanding foam for packing? Spray some foam in the bottom of the container and put a trash bag over it then put the trans in and let it build up around it. Then use another trash bag for the top and put the lid on. Or maybe even spray it into the trash bag and put it in the box. If you do it right you should have a rough mold of the trans and the trans won't be able to move at all...
-
Re: Getting a Transmission shipped?
annnnd if you use the wrong foam, you get a 5ft blob of foam with bits of rubbermaid tote embedded in it rolled to your door :D

I tried that a few years ago, it didn't work for me. Foam wouldn't stiffen up in bag:confused:

Re: Getting a Transmission shipped?
When Chris at TU returned my rebuilt tranny, he shipped it in a cardboard box inside another cardboard box with a layer of 3/4 - 1" expanded styrofoam between the cardboard layers. The transmission was also wrapped with bubble wrap and packing paper. It traveled beautifully from AZ to WI. Much lighter too.

Re: Getting a Transmission shipped?
What is the best way to place the transmission in the 35 gal container? Do you remove anything from the transmision besides brackets? I cut a piece of plywood to fit in the bottom of the tote for extra strength and placed the trans in right side up. The bell and diff cover is right up against the sides. It looks like if you remove the part the axle fits into and place it bell side down it would fit a lot better. The only reason I didn't do it that way was I was afraid the diff would be rattling around and get messed up.
Thanks,
Bob

Re: Getting a Transmission shipped?
I shipped a 568 from MD to Arizona last month. Did the online quote and it came out to $150 w/fedex or ups. Took it to the store and fedex came out to $215, ups was $165 :faint:
Shipped via standard ground. Have prices gone up that much ?
