Essential tools for a road trip
Several times a year I travel from Toronto to NYC and usually take way too many tools....just in case. The car has never broke down on me not even limp mode. Well my 87 P body has only 60k on the clock, so I was thinking to reduce what I travel with.
here is what I am planning to leave in the car
full metric socket set
philip screwdriver
slot screwdriver
cheap dvm
spare fuses
spare HEP, hall effect
gloves,
tie wraps
american $$$$
jumper cables
flashlight
road maps
tire pump
Mobile 1
Did I miss anything?
Re: Essential tools for a road trip
That should be more than enough. This last trip to SDAC I took my usual stuff, but it was to help others wrench if they needed the help. I ended up having to pull the SBEC and dry out the chip after a bad storm. That was the only problem in close to 2K miles and only problem I've ever experienced in the car.
Re: Essential tools for a road trip
Water bottles and AAA card (road side assistance)is what I would add.
People die near desert area regularly due to lack of water, might not be the same in the east coast, but why take chances.

I always carry at least a quart.

A full set of light bulbs, a real lug wrench or even a dedicated breaker bar and deep 19mm 6 point and a pair of wire cutters for those zip ties. Like these
Re: Essential tools for a road trip
Good list. I have a bag loaded similarily with the addition of a spare fan relay, self sealing plumbing tape and a small bottle of radiator stop leak.
So far I haven't needed any of it. ( Knocking on wood)

humm
Full set of bulbs ...ya good idea. 2 years ago I was stopped by a Maine trooper and given a hard time for the bulb out for my license plate. I mentioned I would turn around and go to the Irving gas station a couple of miles back...he paused and said "No, don't worry about it, it's not that important!" WT...
Relay fan..interesting. Are they prone to die? Like the HEP???
I just bought a role of the 3M self sealing electrical tape, I will throw it in the car

The ONLY thing to use. If you're in the middle of nowhere it'll get you home and won't ruin everything in the process.

This is great stuff, thanks for the input

I usually carry one of the 150+ craftsman tool kits that comes in the plastic briefcase style holders. Has room for some extra tools in bottom, which for me includes a DVM, a slotted and phillips screwdriver and a dogbone style set of allen and torx keys.

LOL that was the old me. Even include overalls, all belts, extra wire, spdt switches, unions, rubber fuel lines, tire patch kit and the list goes on. Seriously the trunk was nearly half full!!!!!
Re: Essential tools for a road trip
The toolkit I carry doesn't really take up that much space. Might have some spare wire from other projects. Also used to carry a butane soldering iron in glovebox.
