Troubleshooting Cruise Control
I am trying to figure out why the cruise control on my 92 IROC R/T Stopped working. I have checked the electrical connections, checked for vacuum. I replaced the vacuum servo. I checked the fuse. Still nothing. Does anyone have any other things to check or perhaps the troubleshooting list form the service manual. I am stumped.
Next on the list is to check resistance on the wires between the servo and SBEC.
Re: Troubleshooting Cruise Control
Your speed sensor is functioning, correct?
Re: Troubleshooting Cruise Control
Yes, my speedometer reads correctly.
Re: Troubleshooting Cruise Control
Have you looked at the brake switch yet? That would be my next place to go.
Re: Troubleshooting Cruise Control
What should I check on the brake switch? I know that it is functional for the tail lights. I tested the clutch switch, and that is still operating properly.
Re: Troubleshooting Cruise Control
I had a problem with my cruise not working. Went through the steps of troubleshooting skipping the most important of checking for loose connections. When I went under the dash to check the brake switch I found that there was a connector under the dash for the brake switch that was not seated properly. I'm pretty sure my brake lights were working, but the cruise disable portion is a different wire than the brake lights. Pushed the connector back together and haven't had a problem since.
Re: Troubleshooting Cruise Control
I had an issue with the brake switch a few weeks ago when I installed my remote start. I pulled up the wiring diagrams and I will check to make sure the wire that goes from the switch to the sbec is connected.
Update to come!
Re: Troubleshooting Cruise Control
Yeah, it is a different switch for the cruise cars vs. the non cruise cars. There are a couple more wires running to it. I would think that a loose connection could be the cause or just the part of the switch that effects cruise could fail too.
Re: Troubleshooting Cruise Control
Took the brake switch out of the car tonight, The SBEC grounded side of the switch was not working, I had the brake switch blow apart a few weeks ago. Anyways I "rebuilt" the switch tested the wire that goes from the switch to the SBEC and that was function right in the end. I took the car out for a drive and the cruise control worked one or twice. I am going to go ahead and pick up a new brake from the JY and try replacing it. I think mine is faulty. So I found the cause and I also have a solution. I call that a success.
Re: Troubleshooting Cruise Control
Bradd be aware that there are 4 and 6 wire brake switches on factory cars depending on whether it had cruise or not. When I checked a couple years ago Rock Auto had very inexpensive aftermarket brake switches. They were as cheap as salvage yard. All aftermarket are 6 wire to my knowledge.
Re: Troubleshooting Cruise Control
Thanks Todd,
I drove the car into work today and if I push up on the brake pedal, I can get the cruise to work. I am thinking the tab that holds the switch in needs a small tweak to hold the switch firmly. Happy to find the problem.
Looked on Rockauto and the switch is 20. I will just run to the JY and pull a couple. Always good to have spares!
Re: Troubleshooting Cruise Control
Bent the tabs tighter on the clip that retains the brake switch and reinstalled my switch. Cruise working perfectly now!
Re: Troubleshooting Cruise Control
Gald you got it working and was something simple.
