A-555 Intermediate Shaft Repair
I'm not sure what the policy is here for bumping old threads. Apologies if I should have posted in an old thread of mine.
I found a post on here from 2011, which said "If the bearing surface on the bell housing end is torn up Simon/turbovanman offers a repair service that puts a sleeve on".
I have this issue. In 2016 I had a supposedly reputable race engine machine shop weld and surface the bellhousing beard end of the intermediate shaft. A few people on here told me it didn't look right. Wish I would have listened. Bottom line - there's a huge groove worn in the shaft from the bearing rollers. I haven't pulled the bearing yet, but I believe it is undamaged. The diameter of the damaged area is 1.322".

Simon/turbovanman - are you still repairing these? If so, please let me know your fee. I will strip everything off the intermediate shaft before sending it.
I have another intermediate shaft, but there's unfortunately a few areas in the and pinion gear which make me not want to use it. Perhaps I could also send that in for you to inspect and if it looks usable, I'll pay to sleeve them both.
Currently, the car is making 270HP at the wheels, but this was with a very sub-optimal tune, and only 11PSI boost. My goal was always 300 at the wheels. The one trip to the dyno killed the transmission.
Thanks in advance.
Re: A-555 Intermediate Shaft Repair
OMG, this is terrible and upsets my stomach. What did they say when you talked to the machine shop?
Re: A-555 Intermediate Shaft Repair
Sleeve=better than weld for output shaft.

I've not contacted them yet. I just discovered the issue. I will talk to them about it. This place has been stroking crankshafts for 35 years. I've never heard a bad word about them, which is why I am so surprised by this. If anything, it will let them know that whatever process they used is highly in-effective for such a job.
I won't be asking for or expecting a refund. This was a custom job on a 30 year old part.
I'm just hoping someone here can do a proper job with a hardened sleeve. Sucks I don't have access to the equipment I did many years ago when working as a fabricator/welder in a cool little machine shop. I'd do it myself.

What material is the sleeve generally constructed from? Bronze? I would imagine I'd want something equally hard to the bearing rollers.
Re: A-555 Intermediate Shaft Repair
Subscribing for possible solutions. I may be in this same situation in the near future.
If there's a sleeve option IMO that would be the way to go.
Have the countershaft ground down to a spec, freeze countershaft and bake sleeve in an over. Bingo bango done.

Might be quicker to PM him, he's not on here as often anymore.

Re: A-555 Intermediate Shaft Repair
Adam Lengel was going to make sleeves. I don't know if he has made them yet.
Re: A-555 Intermediate Shaft Repair
The shop in Anaheim CA that did the sleeving for the SoCal members in the 90's and 00's is long gone. It's Disneyland parking lot now.

sorta..... ask the guys with high HP 568's with the press on race. if you dont tig weld the race/sleeve on, it walks off and chews a hole through the case.

that said, if the goal is 300whp, then its probably fine to do the bake/freeze fit.

I've `read on here that some have pulled transmissions from stock vehicles apart to find the race has walked off. I'll probably tig the race on the next 568 that I build. I'm of the opinion that it's the axial force from the helical gears which walks it off.
Re: A-555 Intermediate Shaft Repair
I know a guy with NOS Intermediate shafts.
Re: A-555 Intermediate Shaft Repair
I can TIG weld no problem. I don't have access to a decent lathe. I'd certainly be super interested in an NOS shaft, I would keep my two for future repairs!

Ooh. I will know very soon whether or not I need one. Thank you!
BTW Which of those would be for the 89 Van A555? The ones on the right?

is one of those a sleeved 568 shaft? or a repaired 555?
Brian
Re: A-555 Intermediate Shaft Repair
It's sleeved. The OD of the sleeve is the same size as a 555 shaft. The oil hole in the end is larger, but I don't think it's a 568 because it has the earlier type of synchro splines.
It was supposed to be a 520 shaft when I bought it. I got it with the sleeve already installed.
