Re: Beeble's 1987 Dodge Daytona Shelby Z Project Thread
Well it's been a long winter and I haven't gotten much done. Was browsing CL and found a deal I couldn't pass up....
An 88 Shelby Z T-Top. Owner was cleaning the garage and needed it out, so I snapped it up for a song. Came with a TON of parts.

The floors are gone and the quarters and rockers are a disaster. Previous owner had redone about half the floor before they gave up. As much as I love the t-tops The damage to the quarters makes this a lost cause. :( I plan on parting the thing down and scrapping the unibody.
I haven't even been through everything yet but here's the highlights of what I got:
2 whole 87 motors (not pistons in either) with accessories
Another A555
One very nice looking head, possibly recently redone
88 electronics to potentially convert the 87
Nice condition pumpers
Two sets of T-tops
3" downpipe
1 Garrett turbo
1 Mitsu turbo
1 Airesearch turbo (have not fully investegated that one yet)
Full set of charcoal leather enthusiast seats.
+20 injectors (need to check condition)
ported water pump housing
NIB vac block
Full 89-90 body kit (rear bumper, front fascia and side skirts)
The car is basically complete, so I can mix and match just about every piece to find the best parts. I feel really bad that I'll be tearing it down, but the rust damage is just way more than I want to deal with.
So over the next week or two I'll be organizing and cataloging parts and then it's (finally) time to work on the 2.5 and get the car ready to receive it!
Re: Beeble's 1987 Dodge Daytona Shelby Z Project Thread
Wow looks like you found yourself a very nice parts car. Get crack-a-lacking on this beast
Re: Beeble's 1987 Dodge Daytona Shelby Z Project Thread
Cool project, keep the pictures coming!
Re: Beeble's 1987 Dodge Daytona Shelby Z Project Thread
Been scrubbing on the 2.5 for the past few nights. She's pretty much ready fer a spash of color!

Oil pan and valve cover arent staying, so don't look at those :D
Trying to decide if I just want to hit it with some VHT rattle can or if I want to get a whole paint kit from POR15 or similar.
Tomorrow we'll begin cleaning out the engine bay!!

Pulled the cross member out today:

The rack was loose on the cross member, look at this crap:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...a/P1010013.jpg
Bolts have completely failed, and it looks like some knucklehead tried to cut the cross member to get access to put some nuts on those bolts, but gave up. Unbelievable. Thank god for the donor car.
Annoying, because now I have to completely disable the donor car for its crossmember/rack. Was looking forward to buying suspension parts tonight... instead, more dismantling.
Re: Beeble's 1987 Dodge Daytona Shelby Z Project Thread
You know, the t-top was a conversion to hard top cars... Im sure a guy could convert a hard top to a t-top if he had a complete t-top parts car...

Don't tempt me!!!
Re: Beeble's 1987 Dodge Daytona Shelby Z Project Thread
Still slowly hammering away...
Crossmember number two is out. This one looks fantastic. Working on the 88 has helped affirm my decision to eventually scrap the Donortona though, unbelievable rust underneath. The bolt under the drivers foot well gave me fits, I broke several socket extensions on that damn thing. Still it's out, and it's solid.

The 2.5 is spic and span, ready for some paint:

Turbo is completely disassembled, cleaned up, and I picked up a 2.5" swing valve to complete the package.

Just plodding along....
Re: Beeble's 1987 Dodge Daytona Shelby Z Project Thread
Welding day!!!
Be gentle, it's the first time I've welded on a car.
area under the battery tray had to go... there wasn't much left. Fortunately it was the one spot on the Donertona that wasn't rusted.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...a/DSC09016.jpg
The next series shows some pretty scary business. My guess is that someone hit a parking lot barrier and popped all the spot welds across the bottom of the front cross member. The torque from the motor mount had torn the sheet metal all the way to the top of the member. It had also popped the spot welds in the corners. You could move the entire thing by hand. Yikes.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...a/DSC09017.jpg
Welded up the two tears and completely welded in the corners. I also "replaced" the spot welds across the bottom, either where the original ones were, or along side the holes for securing the bottom of the fascia.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...a/DSC09018.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...a/DSC09019.jpg
I'm definitely a welding novice, but I'm pretty comfortable with the penetration and integrity of the welds... had to grind off some bubblegum and reweld a few times. Will hit all these areas with seam sealer of course.
Next!

Just whittling away.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...a/DSC09031.jpg
Ug. Sunroof car. Had to cut all this out below the a pillar, will have to weld in a patch before I do the floors.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...a/DSC09032.jpg
Actually had to under cut the cross member in the middle of the car. That's gonna be a fun weld.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...a/DSC09038.jpg
Got the fenders off, ready to start prepping for paint.

There's Daytona everywhere! A bit over here... a pile over there.

Yea it's borderline. I thought seriously about switching cars when I got it. But it's rotted all the way up the firewall. Bad bad inside and underneath; The body is deceiving. Still has lots of good parts though. I'm going to swap over the whole front clip. What do you need? I've got more parts than I know what to do with.
Re: Beeble's 1987 Dodge Daytona Shelby Z Project Thread
Got that hole patched.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...a/DSC09075.jpg
Trying to use as few pieces as possible but I felt it was better to use a smaller piece to fill in under the center cross member. This piece will slide in and gives me a straight line across to weld the main floor piece to. Once this is in I just have to rebuild the ledge in front of the hole I just patched and then it's on to the main piece.

Oh crap...where to start?!
I need a right fender a nose all the rear emblems almost every interior part a headlight module front chin spoiler....its bad over here!!!!
going to look at a potential parts car tomorrow. Hoping for a goldmine....or a miracle!!
Re: Beeble's 1987 Dodge Daytona Shelby Z Project Thread
Got my parts car home yesterday. Killed what was left of the chin spoiler. Still lacking the Daytona and Shelby rear emblems, the rear interior tail panel, and the tonneau cover.
Wanna sell any of that stuff?
if you can shoot me some prices. Would need em shipped to 24064
Thanks man....and there's no rush on my end...I got MORE than enough to keep me busy for a while!!
Re: Beeble's 1987 Dodge Daytona Shelby Z Project Thread
I'll see what I got. I think I have 3-4 tonneau covers. I know my rear emblems are in lousy shape as well.

Lousy emblems would be better than no emblems! I had figured on painting whatever I found. If you decide you wanna get rid of any of that lemme know! Thanks.

Front floor plan is done!!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...a/DSC09141.jpg
All welded up, Had to have the wife hold in the little piece up by the wheel well. She's a trooper.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...a/DSC09147.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...a/DSC09149.jpg
painted and seams sealed.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...a/DSC09143.jpg
Sealed up up solid underneath... seems a little messy in the picture... was doing my best to make sure the rocker was all filled in. This seam sealer I got is really gooey.
So, just a few smaller (straighter) patches in the back and we're done!!. Also took a minute to put some color in my name. :D
