Mopar Hall-Effect Pickups (P/N 4886069AA) -- Discontinued?
Good Afternoon, All--
For those who don't know me, I'm the guy in the '86 GLHS who broke down alongside I-40 in Memphis after the SDAC-26 hospitality dinner. The car threw (2) codes later that night as some very helpful fellow TDers helped me troubleshoot in the hotel parking lot, a code 24 (TPS under/overvoltage) and code 54 (Hall Effect Pickup).
I was able to get an aftermarket TPS pretty readily at Autozone the next morning, but had to swap my old Mopar HEP back into the car in place of the brand new Carquest/Advance/BWD HEP that had apparently died.
As I have read many times, I decided to try to find a couple of the new Mopar HEPs to keep on hand in case of another unintended road-side stop.
The latest Mopar P/N I could find was 4886069AA, and it had apparently superseded all prior P/Ns. I tried at least a half-dozen places online, and they were all sold out, then called my closest Dodge dealership and was told that P/N had been discontinued and no Mopar replacements could be ordered.
I tried one additional online source that led me to a Dodge dealership in Massachusetts, who was somehow able to look at nationwide stock at other dealers. They gave me (3) dealers that were somewhat close to SW Virginia, and I ended up ordering from a dealership in Georgia.
The other (2) dealerships that I was told had stock were:
Sharp Motor Company in Pulaski, TN, had (1) Mopar HEP left in stock, 1-877-771-7508
Driver Motors in Mayfield, KY, had (3) Mopar HEPs left in stock, 1-866-974-5740
Obviously there are probably other dealers that still have stock, but as of 7/7/2016, those were the closest available Mopar HEPs to SW Virginia. I was surprised they were so tough to find, and not cheap! The Mopar ones listed at $128. The dealership in Georgia sold me (2) for $100 a piece plus shipping after I asked “could they help me out on the price?”. I didn’t seriously expect a discount, but was pleasantly surprised they were willing to work with me.
The Mopar HEPs showed up yesterday, and one bag was production-dated 1998, the other 2000, so they’ve been on the shelf for a while!
Just figured I’d pass on the specific locations of a few more of these pieces of gold for you folks to snap up….
Have a nice afternoon!
Dave

I keep a bag of used ones in my race box, the aftermarket units are unreliable and sometimes not accurate for timing and fuel.

I'll be the contrarian and say (knock on wood) while I have certainly replaced a few aftermarket ones that were 'suspect' out of an abundance of caution but the pickup's themselves were most likely not the source of the problem after further troubleshooting found other problems that could be easily blamed on the pickup unit. OTOH the original on my Shadow went 15 years without an issue and suddenly died one nice sunny morning in the driveway. The old stock OEM one that replaced it lasted 6 weeks before dropping dead in the same manner. The aftermarket one went another 6 years and I changed it one morning at work in a frantic attempt to fix the engine running problem that come to find out was a valve seat that fell out... The entire distributor driven/timed ignition system is a weakness on our cars IMO, its incredibly sloppy mechanically and the one piece that runs the entire show is also by far the weakest link with no good fix short of dumping it entirely.
Re: Mopar Hall-Effect Pickups (P/N 4886069AA) -- Discontinued?
The premium aftermarket unit I tried in my CSX last year caused me weeks of grief, turns out the pickups were off 6 degrees! Poor quality control combined with a shrinking number of cars is only going to worse.

I had this same experience. I ran into troubles at Carlisle last year, and like plenty of people on here, I had a spare HEP with me that I decided to swap in. Brand new Standard Motor Products pickup. While I didn't have a timing light to quantify just how far off this thing was, I did see some mighty scary EGTs on a highway test run.
Just as Craig mentions above, the problem was elsewhere, so the original pickup went back in. This is the same pickup that was on the original Turbo I in the car when I bought it a decade and a half ago. It might be factory-original, who knows.

That just mean the Mopar HEP been discontinued since 2000, just not public knowledge.
Re: Mopar Hall-Effect Pickups (P/N 4886069AA) -- Discontinued?
I’m sure it is common knowledge for most TDers, but I’m glad the changes in timing were brought up -- those that can be caused by swapping HEPs, as I did not know that much variation existed from one HEP to another.
I thought it was odd at the time, but in Memphis, when my aftermarket HEP failed and I swapped the old Mopar one back in, the idle speed increased roughly 200 RPM to 1100 and I wasn’t sure why – I assumed after disconnecting the battery to clear the codes the computer needed to “relearn” everything and that was the cause. I’m now gathering that the idle increased possibly because my timing advanced.
Last night, I tried one of the new Mopar HEPs that I mentioned in my first post, and after reading about the variability in timing between HEPs, checked and found roughly 16-18 deg BTDC. I had painstakingly set the timing to 12 deg BTDC after my engine rebuild, but had used the aftermarket HEP. With the new Mopar HEP, adjusting the timing back to 12 deg BTDC definitely brought the idle back down from 1100 rpm, but a little too low -- to the low-to-mid 800s according to the 4000E scanner I just purchased.
So a long story leading to a question -- should I play with the idle adjustment, (http://www.turbo-mopar.com/forums/knowledge.php?title=Engines:Base-Idle-Adjustment) or just give the computer more time to relearn since I've done multiple code resets (by pulling positive battery cable)?
Thanks in advance!
Dave
Re: Mopar Hall-Effect Pickups (P/N 4886069AA) -- Discontinued?
My car always idles under 1000rpm (850/900). Even if you adjust the idle adjustment, it is controlled by the computer. That said unless you adjust the idle screw beyond what the AIS can control when fully closed.

What dealer in Georgia did you get the HEPs?

I guess I've gotten lucky with the aftermarket units, but that's all I've used. Of course, I've only replaced a couple of them in the 15 years I've been into the cars.

+1.
That's all I've ever run, and no issues yet. Knock on wood. But I do keep a spare in the glove box.... just in case...;)

I've found out that the early '84-'85 turbo HEPs are no longer available from Mopar. I bought one from Rock Auto for the Omni GLH build, but had a problem later where there was a grinding noise coming from the distributor. Turns out that it was manufactured incorrectly and the HEP sensors were striking the distributor shutters. I replaced it with another one from Rock Auto and so far so good. Jeez.

Best one ever for me was two summers ago. I had went up to MI to get some parts for the Daytona, and on the way back the truck just backfired & died going down the road. Not sure how many of you have seen an early carbed distributor, but the vanes for the HEP are on the rotor, not down below on the dist shaft. The plastic tangs holding the shutter onto the rotor had all broken. I didn't have a spare & it was late so nobody was open(not that I could have found one anyways). So I had to Macgyver a solution.... I took a couple of trim screws from the Daytona parts I had just gotten, and using my pocket knife, I hand "drilled" holes in the rotor. Then mounted the shutter wheel back on with the trim screws, and it got me home!!!! Scary time, and I had to stop 4 times to re-tighten the screws so it would keep running, but it got me home...
I went out the next week and bought an 86 distributor, so at least I had parts I could get... By 86 the vanes were in the bottom of the distributor, just like the turbo cars...

Holy crap, log in after 3 years and see this, used ones always worked better for me, kept like 2 used ones in every turbo car i had, just ran it on the locator

Re: Mopar Hall-Effect Pickups (P/N 4886069AA) -- Discontinued?
I always hated the mopar ones with the hard wire insulation that caused the oh to small wires inside to constantly break
instead I used to get the aftermarket ones from canadian tire up here - they had a thicker , softer insulation and always worked with great reliabality
so good in fact I still have one in the charger I picked up a year ago last december .. it had a bad (mopar) hep in it and would not start unless I held the wires up
and to boot the one I already had is now 22 years old , AND sat unused in my car in the driveway for 16 years
charger runs like a charm with it in the dist now
guess I should go pick up another new one and see if they are still as good ...IF they still sell them and I sure hope they do
lol , not that I'm likely to need one any time soon

What we really need to do is find out who the supplier is to Mopar, people don't believe me when I tell them about half the aftermarket parts you buy or more are just the same parts in a different box, working in the parts business at many different dealerships for 20 years and now a large multiline dealership you figure out a bunch. I mean c'mon, Mopar has their own oxygen sensor manufacturing facility? Their own sensor manufacturing facility? GM has their own fuel injector facility? When I worked for a dealer that was Isuzu, Suzuki, Daewoo, I could take each one of those brands and pull the same EGR valve out of a different brand box, same EGR that was on the Honda passport, AND GM stuck on a bunch of their V6 and V8 trucks at the time, all the same part, same part, 5 different brand boxes, Daewoo was the cheapest at like $50, GM was the most expensive at around $250. Same part, just different boxes.
