ID of lower IC hose at midpoint?
Does anyone know what the inside diameter of the lower IC hose is in the middle body portion of it? I would like to cut the hose on my lancer and put in a piece of pipe with a BOV on it. If I know the size ahead of time I can get the pipe and figure out where the best spot for it would be while it's on the car.
ETA: What is everyone doing these days for a blow off valve? It just occurred to me that I will have to actually buy one for this car since I don't have any on the shelf.

Re: ID of lower IC hose at midpoint?
Hey Brian,
When I use the DSM 1st gen BOV's, I use the metal tube as well. I mount it just a bit in front of the lower intercooler inlet. Just need to trim off the mounting bracket. That tube is 1-3/4" OD. The ends have a nice bead roll on them. Fit the lower intercooler hose about perfect. It is a close fit to the reverse light switch on the tranny, but everything clears. Room for a filter on the end too. Attachment shows location, minus the little stub that bolts to lower intercooler hose. This was for install on L-body (of course).

Thanks Todd. This has jogged my brain and I think I might actually have one of those lying around somewhere. Now to find it...

ETA: I'm super jealous of the ATP swing valve. If I would have realized what a difference those made when they were actually for sale, I probably would have purchased enough of them to keep them on the shelves to this day.

Yeah all that stuff in photo went on my old SFB GLHT that Jessie B. bought from me. Wish I had bought more too. Down to one engine with ATP swingvalve now. The later cast ones could have used a quick trip on the Bridgeport to make areas where bolts attach flat.

If you get a GT turbo with their 5 bolt outlet you can use this flange :)

The one you have picture of looks like it would be close to the best of both worlds when it comes to external and internal gates for sure though.

You can get the ford style and even the merc style still. I don't care for ford housings as they are almost on-center housings so the air has to turn and go one direction then go the other. Yes the flange offers both worlds with a 3" main pipe and 2" WG pipe. It's going to be fun to snake it back into the center tunnel off my TBI manifold but is doable.

BOV's are blasphemy on factory T-II's
Thanks

No doubt, but I was surprised how eaten away the bearings were with so few miles. I'll add one that's out of the way like Todd did. Not too visible and very functional.
Re: ID of lower IC hose at midpoint?
I meant Chrysler determined they were totally unnecessary
They were sold with a 5 yr warranty and few were replaced.
Any bearing damage is completely unrelated to the lack of a BOV.
If funny noise is the goal then a BOV is required!!
Thanks
Randy
Re: ID of lower IC hose at midpoint?
Late TI, TIII, TIV, and Chrysler TC by Maserati TII all came with CBVs.
So you can say Chrysler experimented no CBV on 87-89 TII, but had to put CBVs back into Turbo cars.

I have a Masi TC lower hose BOV setup on my 88 T2 car I just pulled apart due to rust. Not the highest flowing thing but better than nothing.
Re: ID of lower IC hose at midpoint?
Turbo failure rate of 87-89 T-II Turbos was the lowest ever.
Something to consider.
Thanks

Do you think it's because they were larger than anything else they put on, and that kept the shaft speeds down? I'm going for a lot more than 5/50,000 out of my turbo, so I'm opting for a BOV.
Re: ID of lower IC hose at midpoint?
No they determined a BOV served no purpose other than noise control.
That's why T-II's had the unique Turbo air intake hose, it absorbed noise.
Shift recovery is worse with a BOV as it allows pressure to escape.
Warranty was 5/50,000 very few ever failed at well over 100-200K
BOV sellers disagree!!
Thanks
Randy
Re: ID of lower IC hose at midpoint?
I have a BOV from an Audi, it’s attached to the stock lower IC pipe from a Turbo IV with the factory hose. Not sure what kind of boost you plan on running, but factory is always an option if you want it to look stock.

Turbonetics disagree's with you as well. They say the BOV should be mounted as close to the turbo as possible. All the SRT4 cars too as the BOV's are part of the turbo.
Re: ID of lower IC hose at midpoint?
I'm not trying to convince anyone only making observations.
Wasn't Chrysler'a warranty 7 yrs back in the day??
Very few professional race cars/teams use them.
Of course they're not selling them.
Does Turbonetics?
Thanks
Randy
Re: ID of lower IC hose at midpoint?
Well, it looks like Randy will win out this time. The K&N filter I picked up was a bit too big around and the battery tray on the Lancer a bit too far into the engine bay. On the up side, my rebuilt turbo is in there and I'm about ready to fire it up for another summer. The CAI to the turbo has been revised and I now have a VNT upper IC hose which is much more appealing to look at than the previous setup.
